House Dems eyeing another stimulus bill

By Jared Allen

House Democrats are looking at yet another economic stimulus bill beyond the $787 billion one just enacted as investors and consumers continue to show little faith in the economy.

At a special meeting of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee on Tuesday morning, Democrats heard again from their trusted band of economists and came away reinforced that Congress would need to spend billions of additional taxpayer dollars in the coming months to help pull the economy out its severe recession.

One proposal being considered is an additional economic stimulus bill. Just last month, President Obama signed a $787 billion dollar stimulus measure that Democrats contended was needed to save or create 3.5 million jobs and that Republicans derided as nothing more than debt spending on wasteful federal projects.

“We are going to need more taxpayer money,” Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com and a key economic advisor to Congressional Democrats, said after the meeting. “I think another stimulus package is a reasonable assumption because of the way things are going.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), standing with members of her leadership team by Zandi’s side, said she agreed that another stimulus bill is being considered as an option...............

And not surprising. It's easier to digest (politically) when done in smaller pieces. And I like that this is being instigated by Congress.

4. Debit card for everybody
You HAVE to spend the money on actual goods and services; not sock it in the bank, not to pay bills, but actually buy something.

Rich people can buy jewelry, poor folks can buy groceries. Whatever, but it must be spent.

6. An alternative to another stimulus bill
Make the rich pay taxes at the same rate that Reagan charged them in the 80's.

They can't possibly argue with this, because: "Well, Reagan was the greatest President ever!"

(as we are constantly told by the millionaire media....)

9. They are already coming in some places
Several major roads projects are going out to bid this week in my state. All are funded by the stimulus bill. Several constrction unions here have already informed their members to expect hiring soon for the new projects. I live in a state that started its normal "summer" road work early to put people back to work. As a result the "out of work list" at the Operating Engineers' Hall (heavy equipment operators) is less than half as long as it was at the start of February. Job postings for laborers at temp services have nearly doubled in the past month.

I know this is only a small start but it is a sign of improvement that is coming sooner than I expected.

10. Good news
Since I'm looking for work right now. I kind of think things will pick up a tad bit sooner then expected. I figured Spring would start booming with construction with the funds coming in.
