Number of job openings down 31 percent
Source: Atlanta Journal Constituion

For jobseekers who think the odds are stacked against them, confirmation in the numbers came Tuesday.

The number of job openings this year is down a dramatic 31 percent from a year ago, according to a little-remarked survey issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The number of people hired was down 12 percent from a year ago, according to JOLTS, the job openings and labor turnover survey.

The survey watches the revolving door of the market, counting layoffs and other separations as well as hiring. In good times, openings match or outnumber separations, while increasing year to year.

Now, not so much.

The number of openings has been falling since mid-2007. Separations have been larger than hires for a year, according to economist Sophia Koropeckyj of Moody’s Economy.com: And in January, about 600,000 fewer people were hired than during the same month of 2008

2. Our "JOBS" section went from about 32 pages 8 years ago to 6 as of Sunday.
And they tuck the random weird stuff in at the end of the "JOBS" section, so it is really only about 4 1/2 now.

4. While a Lot of the "Jobs" are Advertised Online Instead of the Paper,
I DO have to laugh at our Sunday paper. Just a few years ago, there were pages and pages of ads, and now the Sunday job listings make up only a page, and the ads each take up far more space. There might be 25 or 30 jobs total, with most in the medical field.

It would be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic.
