Dell cutting jobs in North Carolina, Texas

SAN FRANCISCO: Dell Inc, the world's No 2 maker of personal computers, is cutting more jobs this week as it continues to retool operations.

Dell declined on Wednesday to disclose how many people it is laying off, saying only that they are taking place at its assembly facility in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and in Central Texas. The company, which cut 11,000 jobs last fiscal year, is trying to overhaul its cost structure in the face of a punishing recession.

"I can confirm a global workforce reduction this week as part of our ongoing effort to streamline our business," said Dell spokesman David Frink. Frink declined to say what other locations might also see job cuts. Dell's headcount stood at 78,900 as of Jan 30.

Dell's Winston-Salem plant makes desktop computers and employs around 1,100 people. The facility is not being closed. Central Texas is home to some Dell manufacturing operations as well as the company's global headquarters. The Austin American-Statesman newspaper reported that this week's layoffs number in the hundreds.

4. It is business as usual on wall street and corporate america which is........
Edited on Wed Mar-11-09 08:59 PM by Double T
exactly why there will be no meaningful economic recovery. The precious American consumer that wall street is so dependant on, just keeps being slaughtered by eliminating their jobs or sending their jobs to foreign nations.

6. I was laid off
from Dell in November after 12 years of working there when they closed TMC in North Austin. The place has more secrets than the friggin' CIA. They told us back in March that the layoffs were going to happen, but they would not give us a date. They were going to let us go in December, but they moved it up to November, and were thinking about further moving it up to October. When the October date was leaked to us by a member of management to that remained nameless, the uppers were super pissed. The lower management guy was trying to help people plan ahead as far as getting jobs to replace the ones that they were losing. But during the meeting where they were going to give the October date, they changed their mind and went with November because of the leak. And the upper management guy said "Lose lips sink ships. They can also get your ass fired." This was in front of about 300 people, basically everyone that was on my shift at the time.
Don't give people information that can help them make decisions about what job to take (If you left early, you forfeited your severance pay). Keep them in the dark as long as possible and use them up.

8. Thank you
I've actually been lurking on DU for the past 11 years or so. Most of the time the first time I hear about a story is on LBN. I found a job doing ISP technical support. The work isn't as hard, but it doesn't pay nearly as much. Looking for a second job right now.

12. The Apple store by me is always full
And I see a constant stream of people leaving with purchased items. I recently replaced my Toshiba with an iMac and also got my iPhone. I'm part of the cult now.

11. In tough times, quality and service matter
Companies that make a good product and/or service will survive, maybe even prosper. Companies like Dell who make shit and treat smal customers like me even worse will tank. I don't want people to lose their jobs, but I want Mr. Dell to go bankrupt.

13. If you don't like your Dell,
Just remember that employees have to build 20 systems in an hour, which means that your computer (which probably cost you over $200) was probably built in less than 3 minutes, with the builder doing much in the way of quality checking. And many employees are very fast, building some systems in about a minute and a half. And the burn rack doesn't do many tests, just "Is the HD plugged in? Yes? Great. Start software download."
This type of speed on the builder's part is necessary because the profit margins are so tight on home and optiplex systems.
There is only one sector in the business that is NOT losing money, and that is product engineering.
Hope this inside look is useful to you all.

14. I could have forgiven the defective computer
If their "support team" did not treat me like dirt for an entire week. I feel like the spent more time and effort than it would have taken to resolve it.

15. I bought a dell last year
Edited on Fri Mar-13-09 07:08 PM by christx30
with my tax refund. Within 6 months the NIC on the motherboard went bad. So I called tech support. I knew what the problem was and I needed the MB replaced. They set up a guy in the Austin area to do the replacement. I waited two weeks for him to call me. Finally I got tired of waiting and called them and just said, "Forget it. I'm tired of waiting for your tech. Just send me the mb and I will put the cursed thing in myself." 24 hours later UPS knocked on my door with the MB and 10 minutes later I was back online.
I had to talk to a guy in India. They don't have much American help and support people any more.

Not to mention that the people in purchasing always buy the cheapest components and the company over charges for upgrades.
Which explains why the parts go bad so easily. I'm not one to cast aspersions on my former place of employment, but the company is in trouble because they don't get good parts and they don't have good cs.
