Minnesota Teen Finds Drug Money, Gives Away Thousands
Source: AP

ROSEMOUNT, Minn. — A 16-year-old Minnesota boy has given away thousands of dollars to fellow students and a school aide. The bag full of money he found was apparently tossed by a drug dealer.

When asked how he got the $100 bills, the student first said it was his allowance. He later said he found it in a ditch — and led police to a spot by a highway where they also found marijuana and scales.

The boy, described as learning disabled, gave away about $11,000 of the nearly $18,000 in the bag. Law officers collected the money from students and from the school bus aide, who had reported that someone slipped $1,200 into her bag.

The boy is not expected to face charges. A sheriff's deputy says he's "a good kid" who was trying to help people in need.

1. If you found a bag of money like that...
...and kept it--would it be illegal?

Does "finders keepers..." apply here?

3. Theoretically, you're supposed to turn it in to the cops
and after a specified period of time (vaires by state) if unclaimed, it's yours.

21. That was back when....
These days the police are most likely to immediately label it possible drug money and keep it. Your best bet would be to keep it yourself and slowly incorporate it into your spending or savings.

8. well, the answer to that is that there are literally MILLIONS of people who are...
I won't speak about my own giving, but others, I know people who give 5-10 even 20 to people in need, and they have less money to their name than most ball players carry in their wallets (2k)

there are many good in this world

11. For the past few months
my wife has been taking the kids to McDonald's after school on Fridays and paying for the meal of the driver behind her. She gets some real squirrelly stares and comments from both recipients and the cashiers at the window. Makes her feel good to be helping others and shows our kids the meaning of giving. Fortunately we are in a position that we can help others sometimes.... few years ago I was scrapping by and using the pennies in the ashtray of the truck to buy a few gallons of gas....

I wish a few more million people fell in that category.

Typical Faux bullshit, to mention a label that has nothing to do with the story.

That's the Conservative ethic, after all. I got mine, and that's all that matters.

13. Helps to explain his motives...
Very few teens out there would slip 1200$ in a "poor" kids backpack. It reminds me of kids with Down's Syndrome. Sweetest kids in the world for some reason.

I thought it very odd that they pointed out that he was learning disabled. To me, it appears as if he learned very well.

17. learning disabled . . .
I think the implication is that if he had not been learning disabled, he would have know that the law requires him to turn found money into the proper authorities. They might have prosecuted anyone else. Our country sheriff (now ex sheriff) is up for charges on this very issue. He was keeping drug money that they "found" on drug busts and diverting it for his own use. He ruined his career and the trust of the people in the community, I don't think that it was worth it for a few thousand dollars.
My son has learning disabilities but I think he would no to bring "found" money to us as we have taught him to come to us with anything. But then again, we home school so we are very close to our son. And we are Democrats too! (Yes, Democrats do home school!)
