(Delta) Jet lands safely after hitting birds near Atlanta

ATLANTA – A passenger plane has landed safely after passengers were told it struck two birds taking off from Atlanta.

The Delta flight, operated by regional carrier ASA, was on its way to Mobile, Ala., when passengers said they heard a loud thud.

The pilot told passengers the plane would circle over northwest Georgia to burn off fuel before returning to Atlanta.

ASA spokeswoman Allison Baker says the 50-seat CRJ-100 hit what officials believe were two birds, but their species has not been determined.

Passenger Sarah Burch, the wife of the executive producer of WKRG-TV in Mobile, told the station she could see damage on the plane's nose and right wing after leaving the plane.

1. Dont you see whats happening?
All these reports of Chimp attacks and bird attacks. Soon cows are going to start killing farmers. Then turkeys will run wild in the streets and eat our young. Pigs will eat your face.

A Delta Connection flight bound for Mobile, Ala., landed safely Thursday night after hitting birds following takeoff from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, an airline spokeswoman said.

Flight 5221, a CRJ-200 regional jet with 50 passengers and three crew members, took off shortly after 9:30 p.m., said Atlantic Southeast Airlines spokeswoman Allison Baker. ASA is one of Delta’s regional contract carriers and operated the flight.
“After takeoff, on the climb, there was a bird strike,” Baker said.

The plane circled over northwest Georgia before returning to Atlanta and landing “normally” shortly after 11 p.m., Baker said.

“Our pilots are well-trained to respond to those types of situations, and they reported it and returned back to Atlanta safely,” Baker said.

7. Yes, that this is spring and they're migrating
Most bird strikes don't get reported and aren't that dramatic. Only one engine is generally affected and the plane can return and land normally.

Losing both engines and having to ditch in the Hudson is extremely rare.
