Cheney: We did 'nearly everything' we planned to in Iraq
Posted: 09:36 AM ET

(CNN) — In his first television interview since leaving the vice president’s mansion, Dick Cheney told CNN's John King the Bush administration had accomplished "nearly everything we set out to do" in Iraq — and took aim at a key member of the Bush diplomatic team who's been tapped for the Obama administration.

"I think it's my general sense of where we are with respect to Iraq at the end of now, what, nearly six years is we accomplished nearly everything we set out to do," he said on State of the Union Sunday. He pointed to falling levels of violence, and recent democratic elections: "We have succeeded in creating in the heart of the Middle East a democratically-governed Iraq, and it is in fact what we set out to do."

But he declined to say whether those conditions meant "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq: "I wouldn't use that, just because it triggers reactions that we don't need," he said. "But I would ask people, and the press too, to take an honest look at the circumstances in Iraq today, and how far we've come."

He was critical of the Obama administration's decision to tap Chris Hill, the Bush team's point man on North Korea, to serve as ambassador to Iraq. "He’s not the man I would have picked," said Cheney, saying Hill "doesn’t have experience in the region, none of the skills and talents that Ryan Crocker had," adding that he would not have made that choice.

15. They certainly did.
Iraq had nationalized the oil industry, which was a big no-no to capitalists. Silly citizens, oil belongs to corporations, not to the citizens of the land.

Let's see, who else has nationalized oil?? Ohhhhhhh, the demon from Venezeula.

29. steal the oil
which was the main purpose of going into in. Freedom from Hussein had nothing to do with nor the people's freedom re democracy. All were a front to simply take over the oil, which was quite successful. Cheney and the GOP could care less about the many lives loss because profit is GOD.

43. taking it offline and driving the price of their own oil up like crazy was even better for them.
why steal to double your oil supply when you can sell your own oil for twice as much? heck, three or four times as much!

better still, the iraqi oil is still there to steal later, when the price is even higher!

50. The same time that was going on Iraqi oil was being pumped unmetered.
So, make a bundle off war contracts, get your oil for free, and keep the price high. What Cheney calls hitting the trifecta.

6. And while we're on the topic, CNN...
and the rest of the M$M couldn't be more obvious in their attempts to pillory Obama.

I can only hope that Big O knows in the back of his mind that there will be NO bi-partisanship with Murdoch, and Scaife and all the others until some way is found to break up the media monopolies that have become this era's robber barons. Just like the stockyards in TR's day sold tainted goods, so does today's "media." There is no truth, only expedience, and sooner or later we have to recognise (at least those who have not ALREADY recognised it) that the quest for profits cannot be allowed to disguise itself as a search for the reality behind the news.

The M$M have made themselves the enemy of the truth.

16. If their plan was to:
1) Secure the oil fields
2) Provide no bid contracts to Halliburton, Cheney's former company

then yes, an argument could be made that they accomplished their goals. Such lofty goals, and it only took 4000 American lives and countless Iraqi lives to achieve this.

26. We need a mainstream rebuttal
Everything Cheney said was bullshit! And why the fuck did he
want to go on TV? ( I believe the first time he showed his
face after Sep 11 was on Jay Leno - of all people. I couldn't
figure out what changed for him to show his face and then I
heard after the show he went to a fundraiser. He appeared for
the almighty dollar!) And so again, I think his motivation to
be exposed is that Bush and Cheney are trying to convince
everyone they were the good guys as the the talk of criminal
acts heats up! Dick had an approval rating of 12% when he
left office and he thinks he is important and relevant! I'm
just surprised he didn't go directly to Fox. Or maybe since he
loves
Rush, he should be Rush's co-anchor.

It's a frigging guessing game. If something happened, "that's what we set out to do", if it didn't, "we didn't set out to do that".

They're a bunch of self-congratulating, self-serving, selfish, greedy, un-American gangsters.

42. You're right (I think)....
the spelled out what they wanted to do as they went along. As I said, if it was positive, "we wanted to do that, part of the plan", if it failed, "we didn't want to do that, not part of the plan". The so-called "plan" changed retroactively based on events.

Cheney needs to lie in order to receive a shock to his heart in order to live. Would actually explain a lot of his behavior better than him being just a plain evil asshole.
