Breaking: Leftist Funes leads preliminary count in El Salvador
Edited on Sun Mar-15-09 09:10 PM by arcos
Source: Earthtimes

San Salvador, El Salvador - Left-wing candidate Mauricio Funes appeared set to win Sunday's presidential election in El Salvador, according to the preliminary official count. Funes, 49, was leading with 51.28 per cent of the votes, to the 48.72 per cent of ruling party candidate Rodrigo Avila, according to the Salvadoran Supreme Electoral Tribunal with some 33 per cent of the ballots counted.

If confirmed, a leftist victory would be historic, after a 20-year rule by the right-wing party ARENA.

No idea about Earthtimes, but it is the only link I see with the official preliminary results.

14. Interesting article at CNN International
A bit of propaganda mixed in with the news, as usual. Also some interesting quotes from former BushInc 'experts' on Latin America.

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/03/15/el.salvador.election/

CNN) -- Mauricio Funes, a member of a political party that waged guerrilla war against the government 17 years ago, has claimed the presidency of El Salvador.

"This is the happiest night of my life," Funes told a jubilant crowd at his election headquarters Sunday night. "It's also the night of greatest hope for El Salvador."

The FMLN party's Funes had 51.12 percent of the vote, while the ARENA party's Rodrigo Avila had 48.87 percent with 84 percent of the national ballots counted, the electoral commission said on its Web site.

The electoral council had not declared a winner when Funes made his announcement.

16. MotherF3ckers.
"It's a sign that there's democracy in that country, which is something the United States tried to foster," said Bernard Aronson, who as President George H.W. Bush's assistant secretary of state for inter-American affairs from 1989-93 was heavily involved in ending El Salvador's 12-year civil war.

WE OUTLASTED YOU, F HEAD!

15. ARENA (rightwing) has conceded!
Mauricio Funes of the FMLN wins the Presidency!
March 15th, 2009

Though the TSE has yet to make an official pronouncement, the FMLN will be the winner of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections of 2009! With 51.3 % of the vote the FMLN defeated the governing ARENA party, which garnered the remaining 48.7% of votes. The TSE results are based on a count of more than 90% of the total votes.get_img

At this moment, TV coverage of Mauricio Funes’s acceptance speech is punctuacted by excited cheers and chanting, while outside people flood to the streets. Around San Salvador, we can hear celebratory fireworks from street corner victory parties… and we will forward more details as we get them, but for now we want to join the fiesta!
