Pakistan Suicide Bomber Kills 7 People, Wounds 20 Near Capital

March 17 (Bloomberg) -- A suspected suicide bomber killed seven people and wounded 20 others in Pakistan’s garrison city of Rawalpindi, drawing condemnation from the government as it struggles to control Islamic militants in the country.

The bomb was triggered last night in a vehicle outside a restaurant in the city, which is on the outskirts of the capital, Islamabad, state-run media reported.

The attack was a “barbaric act of terrorism” by elements “trying to disrupt peace in the country,” the official Associated Press of Pakistan cited Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira as saying.

Pakistan’s government is in political turmoil due to a power struggle between President Asif Ali Zardari and the main opposition leader Nawaz Sharif. The Obama administration says the dispute could distract the government from combating extremism in the world’s second-most populous Muslim nation.
