Bush refuses to criticize Obama in Canada
Mar 17, 6:14 PM (ET)

By ROB GILLIES

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Former President George W. Bush says he won't criticize President Barack Obama because Obama "deserves my silence," and says he plans to write a book about the 12 toughest decisions he made in office. Bush's speech Tuesday at a luncheon in Calgary, Alberta was his first since leaving office.

He declined to comment about the Obama administration like former Vice President Dick Cheney. Cheney said Sunday that Obama's decisions are threatening the nation's safety.

Bush says he doesn't know what he'll do in the long term but says he'll write a book that will let people determine what they would have done if their most important job was to protect the country.

4. Because he does not grasp the complexities of what Obama is doing
and does not want to be caught like a deer in headlights answering a complicated question without Cheney's voice coming out of the ear piece he no longer has access to.

5. So? Am I supposed to applaud the war criminal?
Edited on Tue Mar-17-09 06:25 PM by Solly Mack
War criminal refuses to criticize Obama....golly, three cheers for the war criminal.

Maybe they expect me to think Bush, a war criminal, is a better man than Cheney, another war criminal?

Maybe they want me to think Bush, a war criminal, is just so above the fray?

Fuck that shit.

6. I hope he spoke with the word "Nike" tattooed across his forehead
And Bush's 12 toughest decisions? What the hell is that about? That he was twice the president that Dick "Six Crises" Nixon was? Just knowing this man is still at large causes my gorge to rise just a little.

12. Bush always leaves the nasty attacks to surrogates.
Whether its push polls in South Carolina, Swift Vets, or Dick Cheney hitting the Sunday shows, Bush never gets his hands dirty.

But his agents say the most vile things, and Bush just sits there and pats himself on the back for "being above the fray"

Disgusting.

23. "if their most important job was to protect the country." Well, #1:
Ever actually bother to understand what your "most important job" as US president was, bUsh? You took an oath on it.

Hint: it wasn't -and isn't- -and never was- "protecting the country".

#2: Good thing the "most important job" is NOT "protect the country", bUsh. Can you say NINE ELEVEN?

24. "an authoritarian voice"

He is going to put people "in my place."

"I'm going to put people in my place, so when the history of this administration is written at least there's an authoritarian voice saying exactly what happened," Bush said.

-----

This is my maiden voyage. My first speech since I was the president of the United States and I couldn't think of a better place to give it than Calgary, Canada," Bush said.

'...he won't criticize President Barack Obama because Obama "deserves my silence,"...'

....you won't criticize President Barack Obama because 'most people would believe the opposite' of what you would say....nobody trusts you, bush....nobody ever trusted you....on numerous occasions you've more than confirmed our distrust; who's going to start trusting you now?

....fade slowly away like nixon as you justify your actions and existence....

29. "Deserves my silence" indicates that George IS critical of Obama. Notice, this is not
"deserves my support." Or even, "I hope he succeeds." As usual, Bush is being less than dishonest.

Besides, he has always had surrogates do his dirty work, even before he was Presient. When he was ready to fire someone, he'd go in and have a great conversation with him or. Then someone else would fire the person.

Dishonest and pusillanimous. A disgusting combination.

32. It used to be in the tradition of ex-Presidents
Not to speak ill of either their predecessors or successors. The idea being that you'd leave the squabbling and fingerpointing for other politicians and show a united front at the Presidential level.

36. Yep. The only President to ever break it was Clinton.
He made some negative comments about Bush back when the Scooter Libby thing was going on, and he was widely criticized for breaking the tradition.

The tradition goes back to the early days of the country when people were worried about clean Presidential successions. It was realized even then that a popular President leaving office with the support of the people could undermine a new President if a decision was made that the people didn't like. You could end up with some people arguing to support the old "popular" President's decision, while others argue that we should support the current President. Those types of squabbles undermine democracy and have led to many governments failing.

Hence the tradition: Former President's never comment (in public) on the decisions or policies of the currently sitting President.

40. Top 12 toughest decisions bush made while in office:
12] White or blue running shoes for daily exercise hour?
11] Put down Barney while saluting, or just get it the fuck over with?
10] Call Putin Pootie-Poot or Rootie-toot-putin?
9] Cinnamon or peppermint Altoids to cover bourbon breath?
8] Approve water-boarding or electrocution? Crap, can I watch those tapes again? Cripes, that guy's crying like Carla Faye Tucker! Rewind that one again, please?
7] Should I say it was a pretzel or a marshmallow?
6] Do I tell Condi about Jeff? No, wait, I can always claim Karl did Jeff. Wait, crap, Karl did do Jeff! He made me watch!
5] Invade Iran at night, or during a Friday afternoon news dump?
4] Call Laura lump, or bump?
3]
2]
1] Write book about 10 toughest decisions or 12 toughest decisions? If I write about the 10 toughest decisions then Letterman will make fun of me for sure. But shit, I can't think of anything for 3 and 2!
