Three teenagers who were about to celebrate their virginity are on suicide watch after being gang-raped.
Their ordeal, near the Piesang River in Inanda, north of Durban, has outraged counsellors, with one calling the rapists "dogs". Three weeks after the rape, they are suffering from post-traumatic stress, made worse by the fact that their attackers are still at large.
Counsellors are on 24-hour standby for the three 15-year-old girls, including twins, from New Town, Inanda and Phoenix, as it is feared they could take their own lives. They have had anti-retroviral medication but one girl stopped the treatment in anger at the lack of progress in the case. She was persuaded to resume treatment.
They were in a group who were about to be feted by their relatives for abstaining from sex. The ceremony began with the girls going to a river for a cleansing ceremony. They were accompanied by a young man, who was also attacked.
