Corker, Gregg criticize aid for auto suppliers
BY JUSTIN HYDE • FREE PRESS WASHINGTON STAFF • MARCH 19, 2009

WASHINGTON -- Two key Senate Republicans criticized the Obama administration’s plan for $5 billion in aid to auto suppliers, saying the administration had misled Congress about how it would help the auto industry.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., and Judd Gregg, R-N.H., cited a letter from National Economic Council director Larry Summers to Congress in January that automakers would “only receive additional assistance in the context of a comprehensive restructuring.”

The move “flies in the face of what they told us they would do in January – provide aid to GM and Chrysler and only for comprehensive restructuring,” said Corker, the lead Republican in negotiations over the industry’s rescue plan last year.

“While most of us on Capitol Hill are very concerned about the supplier base, this is a violation of trust and another sleight of hand by this administration which will make it very difficult for them to win congressional support at a time when they really need it.”

5. Some of the suppliers are unionized.
That in itself is reason enough for Republicons.

6. because blue collar workers expect wages and benefits
they would much prefer an arrangement that was prevalent in the South about 15 decades ago. This allowed for greater profits.

9. Not just the South.
Utah is absolutely against Unions. Oh, point being a Democrat in Utah is like a dinosaur. Rare indeed. The one lone Dem in the House is a Blue dog. His Dad was the beloved two term Dem Governor of Utah, Scott Matheson. I believe he would be ashamed.

16. I am sure you are correct but Corker really, really irritates me
He is speaking out against Detroit because Tennessee has a big NISSAN and a new Volkswagon production plant. He wants Detroit to fail because auto makers there compete with those two entities, and those two entities absolutely don't want their plants unionized.

That leaves Corker in the position of having to bad-mouth and defame the Detroit auto makers to protect the best interests of foreign entities based in Tennessee. In other words, he will champion what is bad for the people of that area (Detroit)(and in my personal opinion the Country as a whole) to protect the best interests of foreign auto makers in Tennessee.

BTW, I am from Tennessee (but I relocated to the DC area as a child). I have bought only two cars since 1989, I love them both and still have them both. They are both a NISSAN, a 1989 five-speed Sentra and a 2004 Altima. These cars are tremendous. That being said, I think Corker is a traitor by both condoning hurting the factory workers who have invested many years of their lives making cars in Detroit who are now looking forward to pensions they have already earned, and otherwise seeking the demise of unionized labor.

People from Tennessee love him. They can't see the forest for the trees, but Corker can, he knows exactly what he is doing, and I condemn him for it.

Sam
