Obama criticizes Cheney's approach to terrorism in '60 Minutes' interview
Source: Los Angeles TImes

President Obama, rejecting former Vice President Dick Cheney's contention that he has put the nation at greater risk of terrorism, suggests in a "60 Minutes" interview that the previous administration's stance was an "advertisement for anti-American sentiment."

"How many terrorists have actually been brought to justice under the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney?" Obama asks. "It hasn't made us safer. What it has been is a great advertisement for anti-American sentiment."

Cheney, who has been outspoken in his criticism of the Obama administration, said on CNN's "State of the Union" last Sunday that Obama has increased the nation's risk of terrorist attacks by jettisoning key elements of the Bush administration's aggressive approach.

Yet, the president maintains, the Bush administration's policy on detainees at Guantanamo -- including long incarcerations without trial -- was "unsustainable."

2. Excellent response. The plain fact is...

... Cheney created MORE terrorists in the world. Glad to hear Pres. Obama speaking this truth out loud.

to justice every other week. He was like a Batman villain constantly escaping Arkham Asylum.

5. It's Ironic that Colin Powell's Chief of Staff Called Cheney 'Evil'
Edited on Sat Mar-21-09 11:04 PM by steven johnson
Lawrence Wilkerson, Colin Powell’s former chief of staff who left the Bush administration in protest, wrote an essay on the Washington Note on March 17 slamming Cheney’s fearmongering. Wilkerson calls Cheney “evil” and says his detainee policies were only “assisting” terrorists.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Colin Powell’s former chief of staff: Cheney is ‘evil,’ his fearmongering is ‘assisting’ al Qaeda

9. Obama is such an improvement over the Dems of yesterday
I remember when Democrats were terrified of Cheney because they were afraid if they spoke against him they'd be labeled "soft on terror." Obama fights back against guys like Cheney and wins. No reputation as "soft on terror" has been created.

30. The 'Soft on Terror' label
isn't really as terrorizing as it used to be :) Thank God! The outlier of course being Oklahoma where it will end your political career. Obama did great on 60 minutes though, and Cheney looked like a fear-mongering ass.

And that this new sheriff's method of doing things works. So he should really crawl back into his hole and STFU.

12. They had the prime chance to do just that in November 2001, but they just stood around with their
thumbs up their butts while Bin Laden was able to escape from Tora Bora.

However, it was likely intentioned to let him get away so that they could use it as a partial justification, along with some phantom WMD, for going into Iraq.

17. The bush and dick needed Bin Laden alive to strike fear in the hearts
of scared little Republicons.

And what about that anthrax attack that followed 9/11? I guess that doesn't count as another terrorist attack. How convenient for the bush and dick to have a terrorist sending anthrax to people and newspapers who could make the administration look bad.

16. Cheney absolutely did put the country at greater risk
Listen to the philosophy of any rich businessman. In order to make a profit and grow rich, an individual has to take risks. Unfortunately for us, Cheney was getting rich by taking risks with America's future.

Cheney needs to be in jail.

24. Will someone please point out that Cheney is wrong factually?
Every single intelligence assessment since 2002 has pointed out that the specific policies of the Bush administration were designed to increase the threat of terrorism. There is no debate about this outside of our lapdog media.

To listen to Cheney without pointing out that he is factually incorrect is a total joke.

31. Yes, designed. No exageration whatsoever.
After what we have seen the Reaganites do over the last 30 or so years, I think that we can safely say that they are being proactive in trying to increase the threat of terrorism and violence. Either that, or they have managed to be very, very unlucky in exactly the same ways every single time for the last 30 years.
Which do you think is more likely?
