Making the world work again - (President Obama Pens Editorial in LA Times)
Edited on Tue Mar-24-09 10:08 AM by tomm2thumbs
Source: LA Times

The G-20 summit could help launch a new kind of global economic cooperation.

We are living through a time of global economic challenges that cannot be met by half-measures or the isolated efforts of any nation. Now, the leaders of the G-20 have a responsibility to take bold, comprehensive and coordinated action that not only jump-starts recovery but launches a new era of economic engagement to prevent a crisis like this from ever happening again.

I know this is technically an editorial but it is President Obama's which I think fits News as editorial submissions seem to be for writers of DU - but feel free to move if it is improperly located here (and accept my sincere apologies)

2. If I'm not mistaken, this letter also appeared in many other newspapers world wide.
About 3 dozen I think. What a big difference from the past 8 years! The GROWNUPS are now in charge!

4. Wa Times says it was sent to 31 newspapers around the world.
I agree he is smart to take responsibility for placing his message and not letting MSM define him.

and he indicates an awareness of everything he needs to do. But I'm wondering if his words are just frosting covering up a shit cake.

I love Obama. I'm still behind the financial 8-ball from all the campaign contributions I made to him. I like his populist messages. And, there's no way to solve this problem without swimming in the pool filled with the sharks and sociopaths who created it. But I don't see any indication that the sharks are ever going to be anything but . . . sharks.

7. Of course sharks will always be sharks. Thing is, can they be reined in anyway? A pretty good job

was done between the post-1929 legislation (SEC laws, old Bankruptcy Code, etc.) and the "go go" Sixties.

Things really went downhill, fast and far after Reagan. And no only bc of Republicans, either. Until now.

We'll see if better laws and regulations get put in place now.

And enforced, of course. The SEC had more than enough muscle to close down the likes of Madoff and Stanford, but apparently was in a coma.

10. Trade has to be fair.
As it is, American jobs are our main export. And the benefits from the export of those jobs go entirely to an elite group of uber-rich people. Nothing trickles down to ordinary Americans. The elite export their profits to tax havens, the equipment from American factories to Mexico and China, white collar jobs to India and the Philippines -- and our country is left to rot and produce weapons to enforce this regime that is not in our interest at all.

We elected Obama to change this reality. This editorial sounds like Obama plans to continue the status quo. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood this week, but I really expected more.

The numbers of homeless are increasing daily here in America.

And the rise in housing purchases is due in good part to speculation and to the fact that prices are starting to fall. I'm very, very pessimistic. Sorry.

6. I like this paragraph -
"All of our financial institutions -- on Wall Street and around the globe -- need strong oversight and common- sense rules. All markets should have standards for stability and a mechanism for disclosure. A strong framework of capital requirements should protect against future crises. We must crack down on offshore tax havens and money laundering. Rigorous transparency and accountability must check abuse, and the days of out-of-control compensation must end. Instead of patchwork efforts that enable a race to the bottom, we must provide the clear incentives for good behavior that foster a race to the top."

8. I like this part - "We need not choose between a chaotic and unforgiving capitalism and an
oppressive government-run economy. That is a false choice that will not serve our people or any people."

Yes, Obama's already done his "half measure."

Note to Obama: Less talky more walky. Stop with the milquetoast half measures and get the freaking job done already.
