Pistachios recalled over fears of salmonella
Source: The Oregonian

First peanuts, now pistachio nuts.

The Georgia Nut Co., which is based in Illinois, said today it is recalling pistachio nuts after lab tests came up positive for salmonella. The recall, issued by the Food and Drug Administration, covers shelled pistachios sold in packages and in bulk in stores in Wisconsin and Illinois and through the company's Web site.

None of the nuts were sold in Oregon, said Doug Plunkett, spokesman for Georgia Nut Co. He said routine testing showed there was salmonella in one batch from one supplier. He said pistachio nuts from that company had already been sold to retailers, prompting the recall.

For information about the pistachio recall, check the FDA notice http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/georgianut03_09.html">here or go to the company's Web page http://gncinfo.com/">here.

2. Now that's interesting
Ate some pistachios last week. Had what I thought was the flu a day or so later. Aches and fever mostly. Not the worst condition I've ever been in, but was kinda worried for a while that it might be serious.

The package is long gone though, so I couldn't tell you what company they came from.

Apparently they came from one pistachio supplier, so they ought to be able to trace back to the source fairly easily.

8. Buy pistachios from an Iranian or other Middle Eastern grocery in your town.
Wonderful and far less expensive than the "packaged in the US" variety. Buy in bulk.

9. If you want to be sure your nuts are clean, you'll have to wash them yourself. nt
