1. RIP, Dr. Franklin
I had only ever seen him on TV, but his poise, sense of humor, and great ability to engage his listeners will be missed.

2. One of the great writers of historical narrative
. . . and he was a wonderful heir to W.E.B. Dubois' work of refuting the racist denial of the achievements of African-Americans during Reconstruction. And he could grow some lovely orchids.

5. We were cousins.
His mother and my mother's mother were sisters.

Not only did he possess a towering intellect, but the man had a wicked sense of humor - he was great fun to be around.

This a very sad day for us.

8. Condolences to your family
My condolences to your family. I saw him on TV a number of times, and he indeed sounded like he would be fun to be around. Even at his advanced age, he seemed to gain wisdom, one of those people that you think will be around forever.

His death is a great loss to the nation. I hope that his work will inspire more students to study and write as well as he did.

7. I saw him several times on Charlie Rose
An admirable scholar.

Charlie will probably do a memorial piece on him.

9. Heard him speak a few years ago
At a college commencement in NC. I'm also glad he lived to see Obama elected. Another great man and scholar has left us.
