As bad as the Taleban? Afghan President backs law which 'legalises rape within marriage'
Source: The Daily Mail

Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai has been accused of trying to win election votes by backing a law which the UN says legalises rape within marriage.

The final document has not been published but it is believed to state that wives cannot refuse to have sex with their husbands.

The Independent reports it also forbids wives from stepping outside their homes without their husbands’ permission.

It is thought to have been rushed through parliament in a bid to appease Islamic fundamentalists ahead of the August elections.

3. Karzai is our puppet
The only role the U.S. has ever been concerned about with him is ensuring the success of the pipelines.

2. We're supporting this? I guess Afghanistan is only as important
as their ability to inspire al qeada. Women there are damned. I hope they can find a way to leave.

6. I do not want my tax dollars going to either of those governments!
But, then, I was against both invasions/attacks, and want my tax dollars spent for healthcare, not warfare (to borrow PDA's slogan).

11. This is angering Canadians
New Afghan law forcing sex draws outrage from Canada
http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2009/03/31/afghan-family-law-women.html

Canadian officials contacted the Afghan government Tuesday to express concern about controversial new legislation that would reportedly force women to have sex with their husbands.

The Canadian government reacted with outrage following reports that the administration of President Hamid Karzai has approved a wide-ranging family law for the country's Shia minority.

~

"How can we say that our soldiers are there to protect women's rights when the Western-backed leader of this nation pushes through laws like this?" said NDP MP Dawn Black.

"Allowing women to be treated like a piece of property … is this what we're fighting for? Is this what our people are dying for in Afghanistan?"
