General Motors boss has Hummer in his sights.
Source: The Guardian, UK

The new boss of General Motors has pledged to go "deeper, harder and faster" in a restructuring aimed at saving the ailing carmaker as decisions loom over plant closures and the future of the supersized car brand Hummer ...

GM's brands range from Vauxhall to Chevrolet, Cadillac and Saab. But among Henderson's first choices will be whether to sell or shut Hummer, the military-style marque loathed by green activists which has seen its sales collapse by 51% over the last year. The struggling brand is both a financial and conceptual millstone for GM which is trying to re-cast itself as environmentally progressive. GM has been looking for buyers for Hummer and had promised action by the end of March but analysts have speculated that a lack of interest could result in Hummer's closure.

"We've been in dialogue with several interested parties," said Henderson. "We're within weeks of making a judgement on whether we're going to have a sale or not."

from a flea-bitten one-toothed transsexual prostitutes.

(Apologies to flea-bitten one-toothed transsexual prostitutes)

By my count, he's been on the job all of one day now. What's he done in the one business day that makes you feel so strongly about him?

3. How hard can it be?
Jesus, any offers on Hummer? Yes? Great dump it. No? Then eliminate it, and revamp any American soil factories to build something else.

5. Make it electric.
I'd bet they could stuff an awful lot of batteries into the behemoth. It could be the greenest vehicle on the highway.

6. And good only for 5 minutes
at 35 mph. Then you gotta go find a power outlet and plug it in for 6 hours, just for 5 minutes of useful power on that beast.

10. Make Hummer commission-only

for the US Military

But take it off the general market.

Its days are gone.

Local Hummer dealers are leasing them for $259/mo and I don't think they're moving them even at that price.

14. GM doesn't make the military Humvee
AM General makes the military Humvee and the H2 Hummer. GM makes the H3 Hummer.

One of the biggest problems with justifying terminating the Hummer brand is that the brand isn't that expensive to GM. They buy the H2 from another company, and the H3 is made in the same factory as the Colorado/Canyon pickup. The problem is, there are a LOT of franchised dealers that sell these things, that won't appreciate not having a car to sell if GM pulls the brand. Any plan for GM's recovery that involves killing a brand needs to have an out for the companies selling it.

19. H3s are just another giant SUV
I work at a rent-a-car place,
and drive H3s and everything else, all the time.

to me, they are just another big SUV

if you dislike the H3, as I do,
you should also dislike the

Ford Expedition,
the giant Toyota thing,
and all the other monstrosities we got
on the lot

23. They shouldn't stop at Hummers.
The real demon here is their marketing. The ad campaigns constantly sending the message to anxious parents that if they don't buy an SUV, they're putting their kids in danger.

27. The Hummer is an inefficient, unnecessary car
At a time when the environment needs all the help it can get and fuel prices are in the skies, the latest thing we need is this gas-guzzler. I say replace it by a nice hybrid or electric model.
