Kucinich: Bring troops home
http://www.dmregister.com/news/stories/c4789004/21851964.html

Ottumwa, Ia. - It's time to bring American troops home from Iraq, Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich said Sunday at a nationally televised forum in Ottumwa.

"This is the time for us to rejoin the world community, rejoin the United Nations and get our troops out of there," said Kucinich, an Ohio congressman, at a forum hosted by U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa and televised by C-SPAN. "I don't like the fact that our men and women are being used for targets."

Kucinich's comments came as yet another U.S. solider was killed early Sunday south of Baghdad. According to the Associated Press, 163 U.S. soldiers have now died in Iraq, including 48 killed since President Bush declared major combat over on May 1.

5. But what happens when we pull out?
I'm not saying I do not want our troops home, but what would happen if we pulled out?

Most nations in the U.N. see this as Bush's mistake and want no part in it. Why would they send their troops in?

Do you think that Iraq is at the point that they could bring order to their county in a civilized manor? If they cannot, who would be responsible for the ethnic fighting that would breakout?

I ask these questions because I do not know the answers to them. I did not want the troops there in the first place, but now that we are there, we need to take responsibility for what we have done. Saying we need to get our troops out is good, but that cannot be the only part of the plan. Assuming the U.N. will just pick-up our mess is, I think, unrealistic.

I am tired, as we all are, of our troops getting killed, but I also fear what will happen if there is a power vacuum. If a civil war happens in Iraq, thousands will die. I thought this war was wrong partly because thousands would die and I do not know if I could support another action that would result in thousands more dying.

I hope to hear your thoughts on this matter.

6. not true
if it was done through the UN Nations like France Germany Russia said they would allow for peace keepers to be sent in.

their issue right now is with the current Resolution regarding Iraq.
They view it as the UN sending in troops without any say over the daily running, etc., of Iraq. The UN would be doing the U.S.'s bidding and the contracts and such would stand as is; the police of the country so the U.S. could make money.

7. Kucinich on Iraq-"direct from the horse's mouth"
Santa Fe July 2. The U. S. must turn over the occupation to the UN, with UN peacekeepers IN CHARGE and NOT taking orders from U. S. troops or command. The U. S. may have a small portion of the troops there under UN Command. The U. S. MUST PAY FOR THIS OCCUPATION AND RECONSTRUCTION.He said, We broke that country and now we have an obligation to make that country whole."(ABQ Journal, July 4)

TO THE VICTORS DO NOT BELONG THE SPOILS.All oil revenues must be turned over to the U. N., to be used for the benefit of the Iraqi people(schools, pensions, employing police, food, that type of program)NOT PHYSICAL RECONSTRUCTION. Until such time as the Iraqi people elect their OWN democratic government, the UN would administer the funds. IRAQIS must get a fair return on their oil, not just a low-ball sweetheart contract to a Bush favorite. NO long-term contracts until the Iraqi people elect their own government.

IRAQIS must be employed at fair wages to rebuild their own country under UN supervision. Plenty of water supply engineers, architects, labor in that country. No U*S contractors in charge. UN to select contractors, if any from outside.

He said much more, but he DID NOT SUPPORT our troops just getting out and abandoning the country. WHEN the UN peacekeeping forces are IN PLACE, then our troops, at least most of them, could withdraw.

A TOTALLY RESPONSIBLE AND DO-ABLE PLAN.

16. This was in response to a spontaneous question from the audience,
at his July 2 appearance in Santa Fe, NM. I was there about 15 ft. away.
Wrote up some of this for DU, but unfortunately it was in DU1.

10. "Deep, fundamental change"
Yes.

"If people elect me president, there will be real changes," he said.

The man is real. For all those who want a real difference from what we've got now; real change for our country, Kucinich is the man.

The real deal.

11. Kucinich: This War is Wrong and Must End! (March 27, 2003)

Today, at a press conference on Capitol Hill, Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), who leads opposition to the war in Iraq, issued the following statement:
"This Administration has never made its case for war against Iraq. It is an unjustified war, which the Administration continues to misrepresent and exaggerate. The most recent example is the Administration's characterization of international coalition support for this war."

"This morning, President Bush once again exaggerated the extent of support for the war stating that the coalition of countries supporting this war is larger than the 1991 Gulf War. What Bush failed to mention was that back in 1991, all of the 34 coalition members offered military force, by contributing troops on the ground, aircraft, ships or medics. "

"This war involves the troops of only the U.S., Britain, Australia, Poland and Albania. Not even the three members of the Security Council that support the war, Spain, Italy, and Bulgaria are committing military support."

"This Bush Administration has been adding coalition member to their list based on statements of “moral” support. As the Washington Post reported last week, if this type of criteria was used back in 1991, the size of the coalition would likely have topped 100 countries."

"Further, the total cost of the Gulf War to the United States was around $4 billion dollars. This time, the President has come to Congress requesting a $75 billion bill, all of which will be paid by U. S. taxpayers. Clearly, military and economic support from countries is far more important than statements of 'well-wishes'."

"This war must end now. It was unjust when it started last week, and is still unjust today. The U.S. should get out now and try to save the lives of American troops and Iraqi citizens. Most importantly, ending the war now and resuming weapons inspections could salvage world opinion of the United States, which has been deteriorating since the talk of war began. After all, the greatest threat to the United States at this time is terrorism, which is breeding from this war."

03/20/2003

Statement of Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich
H. Con. Res. 95 “The Support The Troops” Resolution

"I support the brave young men and women who are following orders that have placed them in harm's way. I hope and pray for their safe return. My thoughts and prayers are with them, their families and loved ones in this difficult time. While I will always support the troops, I can not support this mission. Last night, the President ordered an unprovoked aggressive attack against Iraq in violation of American traditions of defensive war. This war is wrong. As a nation we must come together to support the troops but, continue to challenge the policy that has put them at grave risk."

03/19/2003

Congressman Kucinich issued the following statement upon the American attack against Iraq:
"This is a sad day for America, the world community, and the people of Iraq. Tonight, I hope and pray for the safe return of our troops and the end to this unjustified war."
"President Bush has launched an unprovoked attack against another country. Iraq does not pose an imminent threat to the United States or any of its neighboring nations. Iraq was not responsible for the terrorist attacks of September 11. Tonight, President Bush has commanded U.S. forces to go to war in violation of American traditions of defensive war that have lasted since George Washington. This war is wrong; it violates the Constitution and international law."

KUCINICH HAS BEEN UNRELENTING IN HIS OPPOSITION TO THE WAR !!!

It's been great to see a Democrat really stand up to Bush* !
