Six Car Bombs Kill 30 in Iraq
Source: NYT

Published: April 6, 2009
BAGHDAD -- A series of six car bombs exploded in or near Baghdad on Monday, killing more than 30 people and wounding scores more, according to witnesses and the police.

Three bombs struck markets in predominately Shiite neighborhoods around Baghdad, but there did not appear to be any obvious pattern to the attacks. The blasts began shortly after dawn and continued in disparate parts of the city into the afternoon.

The deadliest bombing killed more than 20 people near the Areba market in Sadr City, an impoverished Shiite neighborhood in northeastern Baghdad, according to witnesses at the scene. As often happens immediately after attacks, the Ministry of Interior cited a lower death toll, saying 10 were killed but adding that 65 were wounded.

Anger coursed through the area, with residents confronting Iraqi security forces, who, according to some accounts, initially withdrew. By afternoon, the Iraqi Army cordoned off the area, opening fire at one point, wounding a man, witnesses said.

7. Saturday, April 11: 15 Iraqis Killed, 35 Wounded
At least 15 Iraqis were killed and 35 more were wounded, mostly in a brazen attack on a group of Awakening Council members in Iskandariya. No Coalition deaths were reported.

A suicide bomber walked in to a group of Awakening Council (Sahwa) members awaiting their overdue salaries near Iskandariya. Twelve members were killed and 32 more were wounded. Attacks against Sahwa members have been on the rise in recent weeks, particularly in this area formerly known as the “Triangle of Death.” Some also believe that Sahwa members have been perpetrating their own attacks as well. The group had asked to be allowed inside an army compound for protection, but the bomber may have been wearing a Sahwa or other military uniform rendering such aid useless. The Sunni group is credited with reducing violence since turning their back on al-Qaeda; however, there are tensions between the group and the central government.

A separate clash between joint U.S.-Iraqi forces in Iskandariya left one civilian killed in the crossfire. A woman was also injured.

A blast in Mandali killed one civilian and wounded two others.

8. Sunday, April 12: 1 US Soldier, 5 Iraqis Killed; 12 Iraqis Wounded
by Margaret Griffis, April 12, 2009

At least five Iraqis were killed and 12 more were wounded in the latest attacks. Some Christians were able to enjoy the Easter holiday, but many remained at home. Meanwhile, a U.S. soldier was killed this morning in Salah ad Din province, and four American soldiers were injured during a separate bomb blast in Taji. Also, Gen. Raymond Odierno says it will be up to the prime minister whether or not U.S. troops will abandon Iraqi cities in June.

Iraq’s Christians took advantage of security gains to publicly celebrate Easter in Baghdad, but many in Mosul were forced to stay home. Last fall, a surge in attacks on Christians forced many to flee the violent, northern city. Mosul is perhaps the last major city not to be under control, and Christians are especially wary of violence.

In Baghdad, a roadside bomb blast in Jisr Diyala left seven people with injuries. Nearby in Zaafaraniya, another bomb injured two policemen.

In Mosul, gunmen killed two policemen at separate checkpoints, while a third policeman was wounded in a drive-by shooting. Two policemen were wounded during a bomb blast.

A roadside bomb killed two members of an Awakening Council in Yathrib.

Gunmen killed a taxi driver near Arbil.

10. Tuesday, April 14: 1 Iraqi Killed, 10 Wounded
by Margaret Griffis, April 14, 2009

At least one Iraqi was killed and 10 more were wounded in the latest attacks. No Coalition deaths were reported, but stunning testimony was given in the trial of a U.S. soldier accused of murdering two fellow Americans. Also, the Iraqi government reiterated their promise to fold Awakening Council members into mainstream security forces or otherwise find them employment.

A U.S. soldier accused of murdering two fellow Americans is on trial for the incident which occurred last September. Witnesses described the horrifying incident that took place after the soldier was criticized for poor performance by the two soldiers. Meanwhile, a separate trial for a U.S. soldier accused of murdering four Iraqis continues in Germany.

He faces up to 25 years for the incident, which left no casualties. Also, a U.S. soldier was convicted of murdering four Iraqis in 2007.

A suicide bomber targeted a convoy of security guards in Kirkuk. At least 11 people were killed and 23 more were wounded, but the toll is expected to rise. Outside of the city, U.S. forces killed one gunman and arrested two others. Two fake bombs were discovered.

In Baghdad, a sticky bomb wounded two people in the Atifiya neighborhood. Two people were wounded during a roadside bomb attack in Doura.

12. Thursday, April 16: 21 Iraqis Killed, 61 Wounded
by Margaret Griffis
April 16, 2009
Updated at 11:00 a.m. EDT, April. 17, 2009

Iraq suffered yet another suicide bombing, this one in Anbar province. Officials contradicted each other over the number of casualties but approximately 21 Iraqis were killed and 61 more were wounded across the country, including the suicide bombing. Meanwhile, a U.S. soldier was given a life sentence for the deaths of four Iraqis in his custody.

In Anbar province, hospital sources reported that a suicide bomber had killed as many as 18 Iraqi soldiers and wounded 50 more in Habaniya. Military authorities later contradicted the several reports from their own officers and police. They claimed the bomber had only wounded 38 soldiers. The bomber was possibly wearing a military uniform at the time. Conflicting numbers are the norm in Iraq for various reason. In some cases, authorities are embarrassed by breaches in security, while at other times the chaos of the situation leads to multiple reports. ......

14. A relatively peaceful Saturday, April 18: 2 Iraqis Killed, 7 Wounded
by Margaret Griffis, April 18, 2009

Iraq was relatively quiet today. Only two deaths were reported across the country. Another seven Iraqis were wounded, but four of them seemed to be involved in a family dispute. No Coalition deaths were reported. Meanwhile, a new security operation was launched in Fallujah, and a Saudi al-Qaeda leader was captured in Basra.

In Basra, gunmen killed a money exchange owner and his employee. Although violence is frequent in Basra, reports rarely reach the outside world.

I also really appreciate Margaret Griffis, who's been compiling these reports on antiwar.com for almost three years now. She seems to check a range of sources, mainly Aswat al-Iraq (Voices of Iraq), but also AP, McClatchy and Deutsche Press-Agentur.

by Margaret Griffis, April 19, 2009

At least 14 Iraqis were killed and 28 others were wounded in the latest attacks. Among them was a daring series of jewelry store robberies in Baghdad. Gunmen killed two Awakening Council members in separate incidents around Mussayib. Many Sahwa members have been killed in this and nearby areas this year.
