Cessna 172 approaching St. Louis, Ill.; student pilot not responding to authorities

Last Updated: Monday, April 6, 2009 | 9:20 PM ET

Associated Press

Two F-16 fighters have been dispatched to track a single-engine plane over Wisconsin that is believed to have been stolen in Thunder Bay, Ont., by a student pilot, according to U.S. officials.

The incident caused the state capitol building in Madison, Wis., to be evacuated temporarily as a precaution.

/snip/

Kucharek said the pilot acknowledged seeing the F-16s but did not immediately obey their nonverbal commands to follow them.

He said the plane is not believed to be a terrorist threat.

It's unknown how much fuel is in the plane or how much training the student pilot has acquired.

We might be all sociable and civilized down here in Madison, but watch out for Northern WI -- they're fucking nuts up there. They eat people. You don't want to give them a reason!

F-16s trail plane taken in Canada and flown south
6 minutes ago

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) — A single-engine airplane believed to be stolen from an airport in Canada by a student pilot Monday is reported to have landed in southeastern Missouri after being trailed by two jet fighters from Wisconsin.

Laura Brown of the Federal Aviation Administration said the Cessna 172 landed on a dirt road at Ellsinore, Mo., near Poplar Grove and the pilot ran away.

She said local law enforcement officers are responding.

The pilot hadn't communicated with authorities through the entire flight.

17. Well, I'm glad we got dem Air Guard guys down at Truax to protect us from you guys!
I heard a ton of sirens flying down Willy St this morning -- I wonder if that had something to do with evacuating the Capitol...(I live about 11 blocks away from it).

Hmm...what time would he have been overhead?...
