Footage shows G20 death man push
Source: BBC News

A man who died during the G20 protest was pushed to the ground by a police officer, video footage has shown.

Ian Tomlinson, 47, collapsed from a heart attack during protests outside the Bank of England last Wednesday.

Newsagent Mr Tomlinson, who was not protesting, is seen receiving a two-handed push from a police officer.

A New York fund manager recorded the footage, saying he came forward with the video because Mr Tomlinson's family "were not getting any answers".

Chances are that street cameras picked it up too - wonder what happened to that footage. :sarcasm:

If the person had been a protester and the police roughed him up, would that have been ok if he died soon after?

7. Bullshit
The police are chosen and educated (dehumanized) to be violent thugs, to create fear especially among the "innocent".

Oppression by brutish violence is their game.

2. "There's nothing concrete to suggest that the officer pushing Tomlinson over had anything to do ...
with his heart attack." Yeah, right, being violently attacked from behind might have nothing to do with a heart attack. The only thing concrete they seem to recognize is the sidewalk to which he was pushed.

20. If you read witness reports on the site as well they say he
was also beaten to the ground further up the road before this incident. It was the second time he had been beaten to the ground buy them.

And i notice they are trying to refer to it as a push or shove. If you look he has baton in hand and from what i can see hits him in the back of the head with it as he knocks him to the ground.

Cue cover up.

9. Protestors death: Guardian video reveals police attack on man who died at G20 protest
Source: Guardian

Ian Tomlinson, the man who died at last week's G20 protests in London, was attacked from behind and thrown to the ground by a baton-wielding police officer in riot gear, dramatic footage obtained by the Guardian shows..

Moments after the assault on Tomlinson was captured on video, he suffered a heart attack and died.

Witnesses said that, prior to the moment captured on video, he had already been hit with batons and thrown to the floor by police who blocked his route home.

"A riot police officer had already grabbed him and was pushing him," she said. "It wasn't just pushing him – he'd rushed him. He went to the floor and he did actually roll. That was quite noticeable. "It was the force of the impact. He bounced on the floor. It was a very forceful knocking down from behind. The officer hit him twice with a baton when he was lying on the floor.

Well if a member of the public had done this they'd be charged with manslughter... i won't hold my breath.

And in the artcile it says shoved him, but if you watch the slow motion at the end of the clip it looks like he cracks him on the back of the head with his baton to me.

12. The police will close ranks on this as always. The
copper who killed the guy is wearing a balaclava and won't be identified.

The MET have now lost any scrap of moral authority they had with the public however i think the damage to democratic activity has been done.

The police have been building a database of politcal activists and used the kettle to do the same on april 1st.
They rang organisers to threaten them it would be very violent
They stormed the peaceful climate camp with riot police and dogs.
They imprisoned thousands of innocent protestors in the street
They beat innocent people with batons (killing one)

Taking all this into account we can only conclude that the MET are now a political police force.

They are deliberately and systematically trying to dissuade people through intimidation and violence from being politically active. Many people have said they will never attend another demonstration again after april 1st and i think that's the whole point of the police tactics.

We are at a very dangerous juncture but i feel that the damage to democratic activity by citizens may already have been done.

15. Past that
Same'o same'o - police doing the same garbage everywhere - since Tricky Dick days, when they started to really hone their "mass control tactics" seriously for this day and age, and every fucking pig force on Earth going to USA for the latest education and innovation.

"They are deliberately and systematically trying to dissuade people through intimidation and violence from being politically active. Many people have said they will never attend another demonstration again after april 1st and i think that's the whole point of the police tactics."

It's not just MET and this is nothing new. There is just (shortening) learning curve of how many similar stories from all over the world one is exposed to and needs to hear before grasping the essential: pigs are no friends of we the people. Even though individual coppers certainly can be, on occation. But how many small crimes, affecting small people, did they solve or stop, latest you heard? And how many big crimes, affecting us all and this whole being in this situation, did they enable and protect?

18. It's damning of the police
But, as you say, the policeman is wearing a balaclava (and we now see why, if he's that much of a violent motherfucker), and the quality of the video doesn't look good enough to blow it up for identifying marks. Yes, I think the bastards will close ranks, and do all they can to stop that policeman being identified. It should be a manslaughter charge at least, in a just society. There'd be a case for murder too, since it was an unprovoked illegal and violent act, which likely caused the death, though indirectly.

21. I agree, its black and whit. If i
attacked someone in the street. Even if i just pushed them over (without use of baton) and they had a heart attack and died i'd be charged with manslaughter. Absolute fact. I've heard many cases of similar things with yobs doing similar to blokes on their way home from the pub.

If there is a cover up, i fancy there'll be a fucking riot and the MET will have lost the public completely, and for good this time

14. But the man wasn't even a protester. He just happened to pass by in the
vicinity of the protest while on his way home. Of coruse, it would be just as wrong of the cop if the man were one of the protesters, but I don't understand why headline writers can't get such a basic fact right.

Killing an "innocent" instead of demonstrator or resistance fighter (bashing a Ronald McDonald or throwing a stone or Molotov's coctail in the general direction of pigs, responding to state violence) is doubly efficient for purposes of state terrorism - until they overdo it and the lid really blows of...

22. G20 police 'yet to come forward'
Edited on Wed Apr-08-09 11:28 AM by dipsydoodle
A police watchdog said officers caught on video shoving a man to the ground during a G20 protest minutes before his death have yet to come forward.

An independent probe was under way into the death of Ian Tomlinson, 47, who had a heart attack minutes after walking away from being pushed by an officer.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) also said it would request a second post mortem test.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7990423.stm

Given the location and the number of dog handlers present at the scene I wouldn't have thought it to be too difficult to identify which police were not handlers at that location.x(

24.  G20 probe officer comes forward
in the last few minutes. I'm surprised.

The police officer thought to be shown in video footage of the G20 protest in London pushing a man who later died has come forward.

An independent criminal probe has begun into the death of Ian Tomlinson, 47, who had a heart attack minutes later.

Additional video footage shown on Channel 4 News appears to show an officer striking him with a baton.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is trying to identify officers who were at the scene.

26. Four now
Four officers come forward over G20 protest death

Earlier today an MPS officer identified himself to his team leader as being potentially involved in the incident shown on the video footage.

A total of four MPS officers, inclusive of this officer, have now come forward with potentially relevant information in relation to the investigation into the death of Mr Ian Tomlinson on 1/4/09.

=snip=

Deborah Glass, of the IPCC, said the decision to take over the investigation from City of London Police was made after the video footage came to light.

=snip=

"At the moment the investigation is focused on identifying the officers in the footage. Several have already come forward and all efforts are being made to trace those who haven't.

28. well i must say i'm astonished. If he
has come forward on his own well done to him. He has behaved disgustingly but has owned up.

However if he was pressure into it as as a scapegoat we'll still have a problem.

I wonder what lies we would have been fed of the video hadn't turned up. Thank god for mobile phones and the internet.

there now needs to be a full scale investigation into police tactics and motivations against protestors. They behaved like anti-democratic animals on the daty and have been hampering legitimate protest for years.

ut took a death to show what tey are like, lets hope its not in vain.

I'm sure that every inch of the financial district was covered by surveillance video. I imagine that they are very reluctant to release any of that. There are probably many embarrassing moments. People might ask questions about training and systemic problems with policing demonstrations.

29. "Eyewitness claims riot police assaulted newspaper seller three times before he died near protest"
"New evidence of police attacks on G20 victim"

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/new-evidence-of-police-attacks-on-g20-victim-1666116.html

A video had already emerged showing the newspaper seller being shoved forcefully to the ground by police as he walked with his hands in his pockets. But a photographer told The Independent that the incident was merely the third of a series of police attacks on Mr Tomlinson, before he died of a heart attack. Anna Branthwaite said that he had appeared desperate to get away during an earlier "unprovoked" attack in which police lashed at him with a baton. Last night, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) announced it was taking over responsibility for a criminal investigation and was still trying to trace other officers involved. Mr Tomlinson's family said they were "shocked and sickened" by the video and would not rest until they had answers.

Ms Branthwaite told this newspaper how she witnessed two initial attacks further up the street as Scotland Yard's riot police swarmed the area.

~~~
"He was not engaging with them . He was not taunting them. He was not shouting. It was completely unprovoked." Ms Branthwaite has made a statement to City of London Police, which will now form part of the IPCC investigation.
They have much to answer for.
32. manslaughter, doubt the cop wanted to kill -
- "just" wanted to get off on his sense of power by beating on a "citizen" (as cops call normal people) http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/apr/09/g20-ian-tomlinson-police-video
"The officer involved could face a manslaughter charge if a link is proved between the assault and Tomlinson's fatal heart attack..."
"There is no excuse for what he did," a senior police source told the Guardian, adding that at the very least he had committed a serious disciplinary offence and a criminal assault.
The video in the above link is from a different angle than the original, and shows the force that the cop put into the blow. NOT a 'tap' with the baton, but a full-windup swing.
Give a cop a stick, and sooner or later he will beat you with it.
34. G20 police officer is suspended
The officer captured on video apparently pushing a man during the G20 protests in London has been suspended, police have said.
>
The Metropolitan Police suspended the officer after the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) called for that action to be taken.
>
The IPCC has launched a criminal investigation into the death.
>
An earlier statement from the IPCC said: "The IPCC called for the officer to be suspended. The MPS has now informed us that the officer has been suspended with immediate effect."
