Report: Conficker worm bites University of Utah
Source: CNET

More than 700 computers at the University of Utah have been infected with the Conficker worm.

The hit includes computers at the university's three hospitals, the Associated Press reported early Sunday.

University spokesman Chris Nelson said the outbreak was detected Thursday, the AP reported. By the next day, the worm had struck at the hospitals, medical school, and the nursing, pharmacy, and health colleges.

Patient records have not been touched, Nelson said. IT cut off Net access for up to six hours on Friday in order to isolate the virus, the AP reported.

3. Shouldn't have happened...
Any properly patched Windows box has been guarded against this crap since MS released the patch last Sept/Oct. UU needs to review their support standards and security policies.

8. The October patch DOES NOT work
I've said this and damn near every Confucker thread and still it's not sinking in. The Mircrosoft patch put out in October does not protect against all the varients of the virus. I got the patch in October and got Conficker in January anyway as did millions of others. THIS is why this damn virus is so prevalent. The patch does not keep you from getting the later and more destructive varients of Conficker. Merely having the October patch does not protect you from getting it.

10. These are the same people who had patient records
stolen from a contractor's car trunk last year. I was one of the one's impacted by this theft. Probably will be this time as well.

It is time to upgrade their computer security program.

Conficker was first detected on campus on Thursday, April 9. In addition to infecting hospital computers, Conficker also infiltrated systems in the medical school and the colleges of nursing, pharmacy and health.

Administrators had informed staff and students on the best practices for scrubbing Conficker from computers and auxiliary devices such as smartphones.
Resource Library:

The updated version of the Conficker worm continues to wreak havoc worldwide, both by downloading malware connected to the Waledac botnet and attempting to lure users into downloading fake anti-virus software.
