China says domestic armaments are world-class
Source: Associated Press

BEIJING (AP) — A government-backed science group says many of China's homemade weapons systems are world-class, reflecting the defense industry's new confidence and underscoring its ambitions of becoming a major arms exporter.

Steady advances have produced a solid foundation for Chinese-made armored fighting vehicles, missile systems and other weaponry, according to a report by the government's China Association for Science and Technology.

"In some areas, Chinese weapons have either achieved or are very close to achieving international advanced standards," the report said, without giving details.

Long reliant on Russia for advanced military hardware, China has invested heavily in its domestic defense industry in recent years, notching up breakthroughs such as the J-10 jet fighter and DF-31 intercontinental ballistic missile. China already makes licensed versions of the Russian S-27 fighter jet, but claims to have mastered the technology to make its own advanced aircraft.

1. Israel, for one, isn't going to be happy about the competition.
They're one of the world's top arms sellers. The funny part is they take all the advanced stuff we give them, rejigger it slightly to get around the arms export law, and then sell it to . . . well, the Chinese for instance.

7. I believe we shouldn't underestimate the Chinese, I recall back in the 60s and early 70s
when "made in Japan" was considered an aspersion, signifying the product as being cheap and of low quality.

Three other dynamics to consider.

Should China's military industrial complex grow to consume anywhere near the percentage of their budget, that ours does, their government will come under similar internal empiric pressures supporting global dominance to either expand their business or obtain resources.

As global warming climate change accelerates, the melting and shrinking of critical mountain glaciers supplying much of Asia's Rivers with fresh water, cause them to dry up, there will be increased international friction over that precious resource.

China's lopsided gender ratio of men to women due to practices of female infanticide suggests a national testosterone overdose with all the aggressive tendencies associated with that hormone.

I believe it would be wise of us to support new ways of thinking even if it includes painful adjustment to a more balanced world economy with the primary goal of cooperation and tolerance for other nation's sovereignty. Less emphasis on military industrial supported endeavors and more on environmentally sustainable economic development.

The human race simply can't afford another world war and I'm not one to believe a war between two Titans; China and India comprising well over a third of the Earth's population would stay confined to them.

Thanks for the thread, Coventina.
