Pirates vow to kill U.S., French sailors
Source: CNN

Two pirates in Somalia vowed revenge Monday, after the U.S. military killed three pirates and freed a U.S. ship captain who had been held hostage for several days. The pirates told a Somali journalist that they were angered by the U.S. action, as well as a French raid Friday that killed two pirates and one hostage and freed four hostages. "We have decided to kill U.S. and French sailors if they happen to be among our future hostages," said Abdullahi Ahmed, a member of a pirate group based at Harardhere, a coastal town in central Somalia.

The military actions angered Ali Nur, a pirate who is based in Gara'ad, a coastal village in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, in northern Somalia. "From now on, after the killings by the U.S. and France, we will add some harsher steps in our dealings with hostages, particularly American and French hostages," Nur told a journalist.

The U.S. military acknowledged Sunday that its actions to rescue Phillips could increase the risk of violence. "This could escalate violence in this part of the world. No question about it," U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Bill Gortney told reporters.

Nur issued a warning to the United States.

"The killing of our boys was aggression, and the U.S. will see what they get from their operation," he said

4. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. I'm hoping that our decision to
use force and send more ships was coupled with a plan to take some more comprehensive actions to protect shipping in the region...

And in the end, we know where Mr. Nur lives.

6. The aggression was the act of piracy. The reaction is why pirates for the last 200 years
have not targeted U.S. flagged ships. Guess these teen pirates should have picked up a history book instead of an AK-47.

9. An "act of aggression?" LOL.
It could almost be Bush running those pirates. What do they call it when they snatch innocent people off the open seas and hold them hostage? Love?

10. What do you call a pirate without a ship?
Harmless... If we know where they are based, why are their boats not at the bottom of the harbor? Why are we messing with their AK-47's when we have cannons, cruise missiles and aircraft carriers?

But I'm betting they will target a ship flying the flag of some country that won't shoot back.

25. Um..
Taking this guy hostage for a $2 million ransom and threatening to kill him if this demand was not met was not agression? Why not just let the US Navy train there crews while blowing the ships out of the water.

28. Not sure what you are getting at.
Am I wrong in thinking the partial quote I used was from a couple of the pirates? Perhaps I wasn't clear, but that was the point I was trying to make, the irony of the kidnappers/pirates calling the rescue operation 'aggressive.'

As for the Navy using situations like this for training, that is ridiculous imo. Only those that are fully trained and experianced should attempt operations like this. People's lives are on the line with split-second decision making required.

It is more important in these cases to keep the hostages alive than to kill the pirates. If it so happens the kidnappers are threatening to kill their hostages at the immediate moment, than I have no problem with the authorities using the necessary force to stop that from happening.

It isn't like we went looking for trouble. The pirates did that themselves. They found it.

Somalia has always been a far worse international threat to security. We should have been shocking and aweing their asses instead of Saddam's.
