What's a nice girl like you doing with an arsenal like this? Police seize 20-year-old guarding vast
Source: Daily Mail

Smirking for the camera, this is the 20-year-old woman Mexican police caught guarding an extraordinary arsenal of weapons.

Anahi Beltran Cabrera was seized during a routine patrol in Sonora state, near the U.S. border.

Officers recovered a vast cache of weapons including an anti-aircraft gun capable of firing 800 shots per minute, a number of rifles and an array of ammunition.

They believe the haul belongs to a group allegedly linked to the powerful Beltan Leyva drug cartel.

Cabrera was paraded before the media - along with the weapons she was caught guarding.

2. Anti-aircraft gun? That's a Browning M1919
.30 Cal , and it mxes out at 600 r/m, not 800. It was designed in the early 20th century (1919, per the name) as an anti-infantry weapon. It would be pretty ineffective against aircraft unless you were VERY close.

Looking at that photo, I see five rifles, a machine gun, and a boatload of magazines. She's got me beat on the magazines and machine gun, but her "vast arsenal" is kinda small compared to mine otherwise.

19. You read my mind,,,
I was expecting a 20mm or 30mm Oerlikon, not an M1919. I guess a smoothbore musket is an 'anti-aircraft weapon' too in that you can point it at the sky. Actually, you could point a musket at the sky better than an M1919 on a ground-mount tripod...

I rarely see a story that doesn't contain at least one factual error, often purposeful in the pursuit of an anti-gun agenda.

25. Shame
I bet the cops are wearing masks mostly because they are embarrassed at the hype being generated over that "giant" stash of magazines. I am far from a gun nut, but this bust doesn't seem like something to got too proud over. I have fired an M1919 and it wouldn't be my weapon of choice for anything.

P.S. Please don't flame me. I know that police get killed these days by the busload in Mexico by drug lords or satanists or whoever. Now that I think about it, why are they in the photo at all?

78. The BMG 1919 is one of the most famous machine guns in history.
It was the primary machine gun of the U.S. military throughout WW2. When you read stories about U.S. soldiers hunkered down in foxholes or bomb craters in the South Pacific, as they fought across Africa, or helped drive the Nazi's and fascists out of Europe, it was typically the M1919 that they were using to return heavy fire. It was the primary machine gun of the U.S. military from 1919 right up to the Vietnam War, and is a fairly storied and well known weapon.

100. Replaced by the M60, which had plenty of problems in its early years
Edited on Wed Apr-15-09 07:55 PM by slackmaster
I remember some colorful writing about it in a Soldier Of Fortune magazine once. Something about a quarter million of the finest weapons ever made (Browning 1919s) "...rot in cosmoline, while we safety-wire the dreadful M60 to keep it from shaking itself apart".

I must admit that reading that kind of stuff helped me become interested in firearms. I was actually assigned to read issues of SOF while I was working for a little company writing maintenance comics for the Army.

4. That's a .30-caliber machine gun, not an anti-aircraft gun
There is a single-shot .50-caliber target rifle on the table in the second image, but the belted .50-caliber ammunition won't work in any weapon in either pic.

She's heavy on magazines and light on rifles (only one rifle in the second photo will accept those magazines).

that helicopter has a flat rear tire. I guess "vast arsenal" is a bit of hyperbole, but a 30 cal machine gun will ruin anybody's day who isn't inside an armored vehicle. So she and whoever she was working for were clearly up to no good.

They poped two rounds in it but I am sure that the first round did the trick.

Last I checked it was street legal and the NRA was still defending it. I am not sure why. Even a .375 H&H would be over the top for any game in North America.

66. The Second Amendment is not about hunting
.50 caliber is the largest that is not regulated under the National Firearms Act. Congress drew the line there in 1934, at which time the .50 BMG already existed.

Last I checked it was street legal and the NRA was still defending it. I am not sure why.

I own a .50 BMG rifle. It's purpose is long-range target shooting. I mounted mine on a machine gun tripod for stability. It's very, very accurate, and expensive to shoot.

84. What's funny is that Barrett Firearms did just that in California
California banned the .50 BMG a few years ago, so Barrett created a new cartridge and rifles for it in .416 caliber.

The kicker is that, with modern bullets and gunpowder, the round is MORE powerful and accurate than the .50 BMG was, despite shooting a slightly smaller bullet!

They are of limited amusingness. You can only shoot flares from them, and you have to be very careful with those in California.

Big parachute flares are a whole lot more fun than the 37 mm things.

The 2nd photo shows a Barrett .50-cal rifle, the Browning .30-cal MG, what might be an underbarrel grenade launcher for an M-16 (or it could be the civilian-legal 37mm flare launcher sold in the US), a match-grade AR-15 (not even a "tactical" version), an AK clone, a bolt-action deer rifle, and what might be a World War I era Springfield bolt-action .30-06 rifle!

Nice calls on the antique Browning! Personally, I loved the little “intrigue” to the mouth and eyes of the model!

This is called “cartoon news”. It was not supposed to be picked apart by people that actually know what they were looking at! This is custom designed to spread FEAR, but in a way that the soccer mommies and six-pack daddies can identify with.

Shame on you all for hinting there may be something behind that curtain!

116. This display almost certainly has an element of theater to it,
probably based on some falsities at that, but this is intended mostly for the Mexican audience, not the American. The citizens of Mexico are living in real fear, it's not manufactured in any way. Large swaths of Mexico are now under defacto cartel rule, and the reign is brutal. Tortured and mutilated bodies are being found everyday. These are either rivals or people who stood in the way. The latter includes police officers, government officials and ordinary citizens. Most Soccer moms and NASCAR dads have no idea what's going on in Mexico, or how American drug policy is fueling it.

69. I guarantee that if that is a full auto 1919 belt fed machine gun, they purchased it illegaly on the
streets of a city somewhere. It was probably a korean war vintage "trophy" smuggled back home by a us soldier after the war and was never registered with the BATF. If it was a semi-auto (which it doesn't look to be), they might have purchased it at a gun show but then it would hardly qualify as an anti-aircraft weapon. For that matter, calling an old M1919-A4 an antiaircraft weapon these days is quite an exaggeration. There are no modern military jet aircraft that this would be any kind of a threat to although helicopters might need to be concerned.

111. Can't actually be converted to semiautomatic; a new semiauto-only receiver
has to be manufactured from scratch. The BATFE's rule is that if something was ever a machinegun, it is always a machinegun, regardless of its functional state.

Collectors can buy civilian semiauto-only MG lookalikes, though. Prices I've seen run around $3000-$4000, compared to $50,000 and up for a civilian-transferable Real Thing.

Edited on Thu Apr-16-09 02:47 PM by slackmaster
You have to manufacture a new one for the semiautomatic configuration. It has a raised ridge to prevent installation of standard internals.

The internals require some modifications, including grinding away slots to match the ridge on the semiauto right side plate.

121. Yes, the right side plate is the numbered part - You don't get one with a parts kit
Edited on Thu Apr-16-09 05:57 PM by slackmaster
But you get everything else, pretty much completely disassembled. The really cool thing is that the right side plate is one of the simplest pieces of the weapon. The left side plate is much more complicated but still not too bad to make from scratch if you needed to. The trunion block is an investment casting that has some machine work. Other than the trunion, the only part that someone with a milling machine, lathe, grinder, heat-treating capability, and hand tools could not make would be the barrel.

The receiver consists of top, left, and bottom plates, and the trunion block. Those parts all rivet together. Rivet sets are widely available.

To assemble a 1919 receiver, the only tools you really need are an anvil and a ball pien hammer!

Rebuilding one is an interesting journey in which you follow the steps that John Moses Browning did when he developed the weapon. I have a partly completed 1919 (need to fabricate or buy a semiauto right side plate and fabricate or modify some of the internals). I have completed a slide and frame for a 1911 pistol.

The man loved key seat cutters and end mills. :D

First, to which "anti-aircraft" gun are you referring? As numerous people on this thread have pointed out, the weapon pictured appears to be a BMG 1919 .30 cal machine gun. Hardly an "anti-aircraft" gun.

Second, a machine gun such as the one pictured is highly regulated, and extremely rare, in the U.S. Only a relative handful of people have the licenses (not to mention the cash) necessary to own them.

and it's not an antiaircraft gun. It's an early post-WW1 anti-infantry gun, and as tightly restricted in the United States as a 105mm howitzer or a 500-lb bomb.

117. Strange, I don't find anything 'hot' about this picture.
I see a tragedy. I see the a nation turning into Somalia before our eyes. I see a young woman taking desperate measures to deal with her reality. When she is released, she will probably be killed, if not killed in custody. I see officers that are forced to wear masks because their lives, and the lives of their family, are in constant danger. I see a staged photo op done to try to reassure a terrified Mexican citizenry that the tide is turning. I see drug cartels that have amassed so much wealth, they can afford to buy massive arms.

Most of all, I see the continued stupidity of the drug war, and it's far reaching tentacles all over the world, from Afghanistan to Mexico.

The United States was on the same path in the 1920's/1930's due to alcohol prohibition. But back then, legislators were apparently smart enough to realize it was making the problem worse, and decided to legalize and regulate instead.
