7. Let the hand wringing begin... Police chief Bates: "...active shooters, this is becoming
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 09:46 AM by FailureToCommunicate
a trend...from tension in our society today" Always the speculation on 'why, why, why', and seldom on 'how, how, how'. The "why" will always
be there because we are animals. But the "how" is guns, guns, guns. How many mass shootings, or any shooting has been reported lately from the animal
kingdom? How about in zoos, where you would think there would be LOTS of tension between cooped up animals?
And before I get lots of responses from DU-ers that always state that 'it isn't teh guns', that 'lots of law abiding folks have lots of guns' (law abiding until they shoot someone, that is)
let review the facts: around 30,000 gun deaths per year, with thousands more permanently disabled from gun wounds. That's around 3 or 4 an hour, day in and day out.
Police Chief Bates is not quite correct. The thing that is becoming a trend is not so much the shootings, but the reporting of shootings.
Maybe that's a good thing in among all this carnage...

20. Sounds like the mantra of Tennessee Rethugligans, who ...
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 04:36 PM by Fly by night
... are pushing bills through our legislature to allow folks to pack heat in bars, restaurants and state and federal parks. They are doing this in spite of fierce opposition from ALL law enforcement agencies, park rangers and restaurant and bar owners. All of them.

Of course, the Rethugs took control of our legislature for the first time since Reconstruction by winning EVERY OPEN SEAT last November. This in spite of Dems outnumbering Rethugs by about 7% here, in spite of record Dem voter registration and GOTV efforts, and in spite of the great Blue tidal wave everywhere else. Of course, they were able to keep us voting on paperless DREs in 2008, postponing the implementation of our Voter Confidence Act (which mandates paper ballots/opscan and random manual audits) until 2010.

Oh, one other thing. In addition to their 97 bills (no fooling) to liberalize free-form gun-fondling here, they also announced that one of their main priorities is to REPEAL the Voter Confidence Act.

As Gomer Pyle would say, "Sur-prize, sur-prize, sur-prize."

Goddess, I hope they all choke on each other's tea-bags. Soon.

11. Too Many Guns!
If we could get a huge number of them out of the hands of Americans and destroy the handguns it would be great. Guns kill really well. If this man hadn't had that gun he'd have had to have tried some less lethal approach for his idiot vengeance. We've got to reduce the number of easily available guns.

12. he met all the criteria required to legally own one
Edited on Fri Apr-17-09 01:02 PM by maxsolomon
due to the absolutist position America takes on the 2nd amendment (a "well-regulated" militia is any male citizen over 18) we will see these types of mass killings our entire lives. what's remarkable is that this is the only one this week.

15. Back that with a link please..The story linked by op
at no point says he is a legal owner. Killing management, because of a pending layoff, or whatever made this person pull the trigger would be interesting to validate.

Pretty sure that murder is already banned.

So you should back up legal ownership or pull that down.

22. Absolutist?
Lets see, we have tyhe NFA of 1934 - tightly controls machine guns and destructive devices, short barreled rifles and shotguns, then we have the GCA of '68...

And we have many MANY state laws as well...

How exactly does the word "absolutist" apply?

16. Or not
If this man hadn't had that gun he'd have had to have tried some less lethal approach for his idiot vengeance....

Unknown and unknowable.

Please explain how you would reduce the number of handguns in the hands of Americans without infringing on our right to own them.

In case you didn't already know that.

23. You'd revoke gun ownership for simple depression?
That'd certainly be an effective way to discourage seeking counseling, that's for sure.

People do not murder people because of depression. Those with simple depression are probably less violent than the population at large. We're not talking paranoid schizophrenia or sociopathy, here.
