Gangland-style slays alarm Iraq

By Associated Press
Monday, April 20, 2009 - Added 2h ago

BAGHDAD - Iraq is creating a military task force to battle gangland-style crime after thugs with silencer-fitted weapons slew at least seven people during a brazen daylight heist of jewelry stores.

The swift government response to the robbery appeared to reflect worries by Iraqi officials about a spiraling rise in violence in recent weeks and their efforts to display a tough stance.

Although this and other attacks remain well below levels of past years, Iraqi authorities are under pressure to show greater competence as U.S. commanders gradually hand over security duties before their planned withdrawal from most urban bases by June 30.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ordered a full-scale investigation by a police-military committee.

The Iraqi military said a “criminal gang using weapons equipped with silencers” was behind the slayings in the Shiite-dominated al-Tobji neighborhood of northern Baghdad.

2. Saddam only did a better job because he kept everyone in terror.
It's fairly easy to maintain "security" if you continually round up, torture, and execute large numbers of people without charge or trial.

5. Last I checked the US wasn't systematically executing people without trial.

Gitmo and Abu Ghraib (at least spell it properly) do not compare with the atrocities committed under Hussein, sorry. The US has not embarked on an intentional and systematic annihilation of dissent. You can argue about the negative effects of the war, of which there are many, but Hussein's acts were specifically designed to cause terror among his own citizens.

7. Bushco sure started us down that road, though. Or tried to. Remember, Iraq had not
had a history of centuries of freedom prior to Saddam. So, he could do things a lot faster than Bushco. Still, they did away with a lot of international and Constitutional law fairly quickly.

4. Yeah, we're so much more efficient than he was...
HE was unable to displace 4 million of them!

6. Apparently, that's what Bushco believed as well. Or pay people not to kill you. Or both.
