Taliban agrees to release Polish geologist's dead body

The Taliban's Darra Adamkhel chapter has agreed to hand over the dead body of Polish geologist Peter Stanczak to the government authorities.

"Talks over handing over of the Polish geologist's body had been finalized and the issue would be resolved in couple of days," the Dawn quoted a Taliban spokesman Muhammad, as saying.

Muhammad said that the decision was made after the Taliban Shoora (council) agreed over it.

According to the sources, the Taliban agreed to hand over Stanczak's body only after the government accepted its demand for a huge sum of money.

So let me get this straight: The Taliban abduct and behead this guy, and then get a huge sum of money from Pakistan's gov't to return his body!?!??! And we're giving money to Pakistan for this?!?!?!?!?

1. I think it's absurd, too. Lots of cultures will pay for a corpse.

It's considered an act of "respect." I'd rather see the country "respect" the guy by going after the bastards who killed him, but that's just me. "Go on, prop old Bernie up in the corner--enjoy him while you can, ya baasstids!"

It mighta been the Poles that ponied up. Hard to know. Everyone claims that they don't pay money for hostages, but most do.

The problem is, the money's just a small fraction of what they believe they're entitled to.
