MMA pirate fighter Shane Murphy injured in car accident

BUZZARDS BAY – Massachusetts Maritime Academy has canceled an event planned for tomorrow morning to honor Shane Murphy, the first mate who survived a recent attack by Somali pirates.

Shane’s father, Capt. Joseph Murphy, said the couple was returning to their home in Seekonk today when the crash happened. They had spent the night in Boston after attending last night’s Red Sox game, he said.

Murphy said he is not even sure which hospital the couple is in. Serena Murphy called him to let him know about the accident, and was shaken up and crying, he said.

The injuries are not believed to be serious, Capt. Murphy said. “They’re OK. We’re trying to figure out what to do with the kids. They’re not seriously injured,” he said. “I think it’s just an emergency room thing.”
