13 MILF 'satellite camps' overrun in Maguindanao: military

Troops have overrun 13 "satellite camps" of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) group in Mindanao, the military said Tuesday.

The camps, all in the province of Maguindanao, fell "after a series of armed confrontations against the rogue MILF," regional army commander Major General Alfredo Cayton said in a statement.

Soldiers recovered a cache of weapons, including grenade launchers, mortars, grenades, shotguns and assault rifles in a week-long operation, he said.

He said that although the rebels had been driven out of their camps they were feared to be consolidating their forces elsewhere for a possible major offensive against the government.

Philippine troops say they have recovered the bodies of 14 marines, some of them beheaded, after clashing with Muslim fighters on the southern island of Basilan.

Officials said the soldiers were ambushed as they were on the trail of a kidnapped Italian priest who went missing in the area a month ago.

Nine other soldiers were wounded in some of the bloodiest fighting this year near the town of Tipo-Tipo late on Tuesday.

Military officials said at least 20 fighters from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) were killed in the fighting, although MILF leaders said they lost only four men.
