New jobless claims drop unexpectedly to 631,000, continuing claims near 6.3 million
By JEANNINE AVERSA , Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The number of newly laid-off workers signing up for unemployment benefits dropped unexpectedly last week, but the number of people continuing to draw jobless aid rose to nearly 6.3 million, setting a record high for the 13th straight week.

Meanwhile, consumer spending fell more than expected in March while personal savings rose, fresh evidence that the economy is still struggling to emerge from the recession.

The Labor Department said Thursday that new applications for unemployment aid fell to a seasonally adjusted 631,000 last week. That was down from the prior week's 645,000, which was revised slightly higher from the government's initial estimate.

1. Just wait another month.
The numbers will be off the charts. Auto makers taking the summer off. Steel mill closing in Cleveland next week. Auto suppliers laying off. American Axle moving to Mexico. School district layoffs effective at the end of the school year.....And on, and on, and on.

We're Saved!!!!!!!

2. I dunno how it works down there, but our jobless numbers are created by those COLLECTING BENEFITS

.

so

If you run out of benefits - you no longer count, you are off the radar so to speak.

Something worth checking on methinks, cuz I sorta doubt the economy is taking an "upsurge".

Ask Chrysler - a few dozen banks; and so on.

This is NOT just a downward "blip".

Our economies are FUBAR . .

(sigh)
