US to probe Libyan prison death (source of false Iraq - al Qaeda link)

The United States said it is looking into the reported suicide in a Libyan prison of a former senior Al-Qaeda member and former US prisoner.

Libya’s Oea newspaper reported on Saturday that Ali Mohammed al-Fakheri - who is also known as Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi and who was jailed for life in Libya after his transfer from US custody in 2006 - had committed suicide.

"We’re looking into the situation, but we’re not in any kind of position right now to comment or report on it," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters.

"I really have to refer you to the government of Libya," Kelly said when asked if the US embassy in Tripoli had discussed the case with the Libyan authorities.

"Of course we have an embassy there," Kelly said. "We, of course, have constant consultations with them. But I’m just not aware if we’ve specifically addressed this issue."
