Test shows chimp in mauling had Xanax
Source: MSNBC/AP

STAMFORD, Connecticut - Blood test results show a chimpanzee that mauled a woman had the anti-anxiety drug Xanax in its system, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

But Stamford State's Attorney David Cohen cautioned that it's unclear if the drug played a role in the attack.

The 200-pound chimp, named Travis, attacked Stamford resident Charla Nash on Feb. 16. Nash lost her hands, nose, lips and eyelids in the attack.

-----

Herold has made conflicting public statements about whether she gave Xanax to Travis the day of the attack. Police say the drug was not prescribed for the animal.

1. Xanax calms me down.
I never go a maulin' while on Xanax. It probably affects animals differently, though.

2. You too are an animal, ya know, sharing 95%of DNA with chimps
That said, there could be differences in effect, dosing, etc.

3. There must be differences....
that's what I meant when I called the chimp an animal. Guess I could've said "other primates?"

7. There is very little difference in physiology between humans and great apes.
But drugs don't always effect each individual the same way. If she was giving him Xanex, what else was she giving him?

6. Xanax,
like all benzodiazepines, and alcohol, and barbiturates, has a dis-inhibition effect. It is dose-related. Think about a few beers feels OK, a few more and you wanna fight. See it at the ballpark by the 7th inning or so. Anyway, why would a drug with a 4-6 hour half-life be in the chimp, since it "wasn't prescribed"?

5. Chimps belong in the wild..
The plain fact is, people should never try to tame them. It only leads to dependence and confusion.
To my mind, it's akin to trying to make a pet of a human being.

11. If another chimp was given Xanax eight years ago, perhaps we wouldn't be in trouble now.

15. Why is it even legal to own a chimp?
Seems insanely idiotic to own an animal like that as a pet.
