History will rehab Bush administration: (Condi) Rice
Source: Calgary Sun

Dogged recently by war crimes allegations, former U.S. Secretary of state Condoleezza Rice was given a warm Calgary reception tonight.

Rice hinted the record of the Bush administration she served would some day be seen in a better light.

“Today’s headlines and history’s judgement are rarely the same,” she told about 1,100 guests at a $500 a plate launch of the University of Calgary’s public policy school.

Rice spoke of the “tough” challenges she faced as America’s top diplomat but didn’t touch on the controversy surrounding her role in what U.S. President Barack Obama has called the torture of detainees at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

...

Outside the Hyatt before the speech, police closely watched about 20 protestors who demanded they arrest Rice for war crimes they say she sanctioned.

“Earn your keep — arrest her now,” one of them yelled.

11. I was gonna say. I know I make little silly ass jokes but you and I are usually on the same
page. Where you looking for that nasty ass look she's giving someone while she's standing next to the US flag by chance?

4. Haha. Wishful thinking, Condi.
Though I am getting seriously upset with our current president. He isn't trying to change anything--he's just trying to prop up the institutions that led us down the road to our present troubles. We are still underrepresented and are still being hung out to dry.

6. She's right, any light would be better than what they get now.
Even an emotionless recounting of history during the Crime Inc Administration, read by Stephen Hawking's voice box would be considered better treatment than the way their seen now.

America wanted to elect a Dan Quyale, and they got one in the Dim Son. Naturally the dim one would collect equally dim cohorts and villains.

10. I have to LOL at how the bush criminals keep coming to Calgary...
as their only 'safe haven'. Bush did it now it's Rice. How small their world has become when they have to go out of their own country to find a 'safe haven' to spout their lies. Canadians despise them, all of them and speaking in Calgary sure as hell won't change that.

12. "Out, out, damned spot!"
Okay, for all her ruthlessness, Lady McBeth did still retain vestiges of a conscience, so the parallel isn't exact, but you get the idea.

13. well, maybe your pet Bismarckists (e.g. Donald Kagan, Nazi SF writer John Ringo, )
but most historians take Marx for granted in the same way biologists base themselves on Darwin. The massive corpus of history works has shown repeatedly that conservatives around the world are distinguished--aside from their ideologies per se--by existing in a bubble. Other countries are thought of/dismissed in terms of broad trends (eg "fanaticism"), foreign policy, and geostrategy--not as diverse nations of flesh-and-blood people with real, working cultures and societies. For example, many DUers know that in 1932 El Salvador butchered 10-30,000 peasants. However, one Jeffery M. Paige found that the military carefully withdrew all newspapers from that era from the libraries and portrayed itself as the eternal guardian of the country. The elites and middle classes were free to foment a total inversion of reality, wherein it was the insane, foreign-incited Indians who had taken up machetes and butchered thousands of middle-class Salvadorans, the military barely turning back the wave of evil! During the 1979-92 Civil War, elites believed the FMLN to be a tiny "terrorist" group (like Honduras's Cinchoneros--nobody's barely heard of them), not a mass, popular movement for justice and transformation. Their notions of democracy were derived from 19th-century Liberalism--the developmentalist Liberalism of Adam Smith, Heinlein, Wilson, and Emperor Pedro II of Brazil--which held that Progress was better for the peasants than any reform would be. Political opponents were subversives whose interference with the gradualist, inevitable unfurling of state capitalism would've worsened life for everybody: capitalism automatically improved living standards, so revolution was unnecessary.
More dangerous than the bubble is false equivalency between left and right, East and West: a decade's worth of Stalinist squashing in Eastern Europe and a little spying in the US (we all know it was all Klaus Fuchs) is held to justify half a century of overthrows and fetuses on bayonets getting fed to pigs "Cold War"
