LA Times12 Iraqis, including members of the Sunni Awakening, also died in the explosion in southern Baghdad.Reporting from Baghdad -- Three American soldiers on foot patrol were among 25 people killed in another upsurge of violence in Iraq today, the U.S. military and Iraqi police said.
The Americans were killed in the southern Baghdad neighborhood of Dora when an improvised explosive device detonated near their patrol, the U.S. military said in a statement. According to Iraqi police, five U.S. soldiers also were wounded.
Twelve Iraqis also were killed in the blast, police said. Eyewitnesses said some of the casualties included members of the Sunni Awakening Councils who teamed up with U.S. forces to fight the insurgency. Dora is a former insurgent stronghold that has been largely pacified with the help of the Awakening.
Awakening members were also the target of an attack in the northern city of Kirkuk. Iraqi police there said eight members of the Sunni paramilitary were killed when a suicide bomber detonated a vest as the Sunnis lined up to receive their pay at an Iraqi army base.
