About 100,000 Pounds May Have E. Coli

POSTED: 10:26 am EDT May 21, 2009
Valley Meats is recalling approximately 95,898 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Thursday.

Each recalled product bears the establishment number "EST. 5712" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The (2-1), (3-1), (4-1), (5-1) and (6-1) markings refer to the number of portions per pound.

The ground beef products were produced March 10 and distributed nationwide, according to a news release from the USDA.

The problem was discovered through an epidemiological investigation of illnesses, the USDA said. On May 13, FSIS was informed by the Ohio Department of Health of a cluster of E. coli infections.

Illnesses have been reported in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Illinois.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and in the most severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and people with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.

Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a physician, the USDA said.

4. That would depend on how long they warehouse the stuff ...
... before it gets distributed. These are frozen products.

7. hmmm . . . wonder if food pantry's will start getting a nice supply of meat . . .
It always shocks me to see the stuff that ends up in our food pantry. Out of date, unlabled, who knows what some of it is. We cooked a large piece of meat that we got from the food pantry yesterday that was frozen. It wasn't labled and we didn't know what it was. After it was cooked, we STILL don't know what it is! I think it is a mix like maybe ground beef and pork with filler. I was sick all night last night so I think the mystery meat may have to do in the trash, free or not, people deserve healthy food products.

Girl Dies From E. Coli In Cleveland

May 21, 2009

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Health Department said that a 6 or 7-year-old girl died from E. coli last weekend in Cleveland.

The Health Department's Matt Carroll said the girl's death is potentially connected to the recent beef recall.

There are three other E. coli cases in the area that may also be affected by the recall and are currently under investigation.

Health officials are stressing to importance of proper cooking and handling of meet over Memorial Day weekend.

Many bacterial illnesses are borne from improperly cooked meat.

9. This is one of the reasons why I won't buy
frozen patties, besides not knowing what or if there are things I wouldn't want to know about. I don't buy beef often, but when do it's from the local butcher.

I'm wondering if any of those patties are distributed to the fast food joints.
