Ohio Unemployment Tops 10 Percent
Source: AP

11:58 am EDT May 22, 2009

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio's job market continued to weaken in April, pushing the state's unemployment rate above 10 percent for the first time in more than 25 years, state officials said Friday.

The state jobless rate last month was 10.2 percent, up from 6.2 percent in April 2008, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said.

Last month's rate was the highest since December 1983, when joblessness in Ohio hit 10.4 percent, department spokesman Brian Harter said.

The U.S. unemployment rate for April was 8.9 percent, with Ohio having the ninth-highest rate among states.

Ohio continues to see major job losses in manufacturing, particularly in the auto industry, as well as in construction and services, Harter said.

"Because of the automotive industry and other manufacturing losses, Ohio is probably going to take a little bit longer than other parts of the country to recover from this recession," he said. "So, you're going to continue to see unemployment rates increase over the next few months."

The state also was in the top four of 44 states that lost jobs in April.

I'm sure these figures are much higher, as I know of many that are still unemployed while their benefits have already run out.

1. Hey, Ohio! Welcome to the club!

California has been a member of the double digit crisis club for a few months now.

Maybe we can get some t-shirts or jackets made.

Any thoughts on a secret handshake?

5. Its pretty bad around here
lots of empty lots and buildings. The mall in the next city over has maybe 1/3 of its store areas rented out, the others left town. Lots of people on the streets. The homeless shelters here are full and backed up for weeks.

7. Ohio has a lot of automotive jobs
so, unfortunately, unemployment will probably go even higher in the months to come. MI is already at 13% and GM hasn't even declared bankruptcy. :(

11. They said on NPR that our real unemployment is 18.9%, though.
If you count people who work part-time but are looking for a full-time job and people who've stopped looking, it's that high here. Crap.

13. I agree. It's the same thing here.
So many that are still unemployed or underemployed. It's scary with no new jobs on the horizon.

15. Well, if we hadn't wasted so much money/time under Taft, we might have had
a chance to avoid this economic catastrophe.
