Breaking: Leilani Neumann found guilty in Wausau faith-healing homicide case
Source: Wausau Daily Herald

Jurors have found Leilani Neumann guilty of causing her daughter’s death by failing to provide medical help for the 11-year-old girl she knew was
seriously ill.

The verdict came after four hours of deliberations.

Jurors heard more than three days of testimony by doctors and Neumann’s
family and friends during her trial on a second-degree reckless homicide
charge. She faces a 25-year prison sentence if convicted.

Neumann, 41, of the town of Weston, told police that she and her husband,
Dale, prayed for Madeline Kara Neumann’s recovery before she died on Easter Sunday, March 23,
2008. Kara, as the girl was known, died from complications of diabetes.
Doctors testified that Kara would have shown symptoms for days, if not
weeks, before she died.

Not the best writing because now that she has been convicted she faces up to 25 years - but it's the papers on line site and I'm sure the article was put together quickly to try and beat the local news stations.

1. Excellent. Parents don't have the right to kill their kids for their delusions.

2. Faith Healing
From the article:
But her attorney, Gene Linehan, immediately said Neumann will appeal the verdict, partly because a defense expert on faith healing was barred from testifying.

**********

I was raised in a fundamentalist church which believed in faith healing. However, whenever someone got sick they received traditional mainstream medical care in addition to the prayers.

It is hard for me to imagine someone who would let their child get so sick they would die.

When my 34 year old daughter was 6, she became ill from what we thought was a virus. For several days, she appeared to have the virus. Then, after she became weak, we took her to the doctor. He smelled her breath and said "This child is a diabetic.". At no point did we consider that faith healing, alone, would have been the solution.

In retrospect, I wish we had taken her to the doctor sooner. However, it wouldn't have made any difference with her condition. With our health care system, it can be a difficult decision to make, deciding whether a condition is serious enough to go to the doctor.
