U.S. wants to resume migration talks with Cuba
Source: Miami Herald

<snip>

"The Obama administration is looking to further engage Cuba, asking the Castro government on Friday to resume migration talks that President George W. Bush suspended in 2004.

The move comes a month after President Barack Obama lifted travel and gift restrictions for those with relatives on the island and eased restrictions on U.S. telecommunication firms to do business in Cuba. And it comes as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton heads to Honduras for a gathering of the Organization of American States, where the reintegration of Cuba into the hemispheric body promises to be a hot topic.

Some Cuba watchers who favor increased engagement with Cuba -- including the Cuban American National Foundation -- had urged Obama last month to resume the migration talks, among other moves.

But the overture was met with instant criticism from Florida's Cuban American republican members of Congress."

2.  He might be referring to the deportation of Cuban nationals who commit crimes in the US.

Then again, who knows.

The Herald comments section is full of nutjobs.

As of 2006:

4. Florida's Cuban American republican are a small minority of the Cuban American population.
The majority of Cuban Americans are for engagement with Cuba and normalizing relations.

6. Agreed
Obama is raising the level of discussion on this issue at the right time. THe majority definitely wants normalized relations, it just the Florida Cubans have a ton of power(i.e. plenty of Congressmen, money because they're influential in a swing states, etc)

7. But they wield inordinate political power and get $$$ from the State Department
to further their little projects.

They're like a mafia and, btw, they control the debate published in the Miami Herald. Notice that this article says CANF wants more engagement but Republicans don't -- that's baloney. They're the same people.

9. But there's been plenty of repug governors seeking trade normalization w/Cuba
Edited on Sat May-23-09 09:53 AM by Mika
US/Cuba relations are not a R vs D thing at all. There are varied foreign and domestic interests on both sides of pro and anti normalization politics in the US, and they all pour mega bucks into the US pay-to-play system.

Status quo rules. There is no REAL interest in normalizing US/Cuba relations.

Doing so would kill a cash cow plank for many a political campaign.

Stirring the pot, as the Obama admin and the ever faithful U$ media are doing on this subject, only increases the push and the push back (in terms of dollars poured into both sides by the various aforementioned interests).

Status quo rules.

The Cubans know this. It seems that too few Americans do.

My prediction is that because of the Obama admin's relaxing of Cuban-American travel to Cuba there will be a crackdown by Cuban law enforcement on contraband carried into Cuba by "mules" working for newly emerging Cuban black market operators (based in Miami).

DU thread on this -> Human 'mules' haul coveted goods from US to Cuba

This will result in media hyped propelling of propaganda and a reaction by the US Dept of State and/or a stepped up campaign against the Cuban government.

One step forward- one step back.

Status quo rules (aka: money talks)
