Minn. parents agree to let son undergo chemo
Source: Associated Press

NEW ULM, Minn. – The parents of a Minnesota boy who refused chemotherapy for his cancer have told a judge they now agree to the medical treatment, and the judge says the boy can stay with them.

Thirteen-year-old Daniel Hauser has Hodgkin's lymphoma. He and his mother missed a court appearance last week and left the state to avoid chemo and try to get alternative treatments. Colleen and Anthony Hauser now say they understand their son needs chemotherapy.

2. Oh thank goodness! I hope the chemo will work for this poor kid and that the delay in
getting this treatment can be overcome easily. As I understand it, the chemo has a 90% success rate with his type of cancer so he has great odds.

5. No, it's not
A parent should not have the right to sentence their child to death. Children are not property.

6. Wrong.
The Schiavo case was about an ADULT and her wishes expressed to a spouse. Schiavo's husband was acting according to his wife's wishes.

This case is about the best interests of a CHILD. The court stepped in and determined the child's best interests weren't being looked after by the parents. Like the other poster said, children aren't livestock or property - when the parents don't act in the child's best interests, the state HAS to step in.

13. Also, frankly, Shiavo was gone long before that mess hit the news
This kid's still up, about, sapient, and has a good likelihood of successful treatment. Schiavo died in 1990, and that's still a difficult condition to reverse.

9. It's the business of the government to protect the lives of US citizens.
Unlike Terry Shiavo, this boy is not brain dead, and it is not reasonable or acceptable for his parents to simply allow him to die.

What do you think the role of government is, if not to protect the lives of citizens?

8. More information from CNN:
Judge orders chemotherapy for 13-year-old cancer patient

NEW ULM, Minnesota (CNN) -- A judge Tuesday ordered chemotherapy for the 13-year-old Minnesota boy with cancer whose mother had fled with him rather than comply with a doctor's recommendation that he undergo such treatment.

Daniel Hauser can remain with his parents, but he will have to start the treatments Thursday at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and his parents will have to comply with the doctor's treatment schedule, said District Court Judge John Rodenberg, who is overseeing the case. He said the boy's tumor has grown since he underwent an initial course of chemotherapy in February.

The tumor is pressing against the trachea and chest wall of Daniel, who told his doctor Monday that his pain was a 10 on a scale of one to 10, Rodenberg said.

Daniel, dressed in khaki pants and a blue short-sleeve shirt, arrived at the courthouse in New Ulm for the Tuesday afternoon hearing accompanied by a law enforcement officer. He ducked under the dashboard, apparently trying to hide from the news media, before getting out of a green minivan.

10. Believe me
Edited on Tue May-26-09 05:19 PM by Libertas1776
if this kid was a young adult, this would be a totally different story. But he's not, he's only 12! He is certainly not capable of making a responsible, extremely life altering decision like opting out of chemo. I'm gonna have to side with the state on this one. I really hope this poor kid gets well.
