Congress (I) to fund Slumdog kids' homes
Source: Times of India

The Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) led by Kripashankar Singh will bear the cost of the two Mhada tenements to be allotted to Slumdog Millionaire child stars-Mohammed Azharuddin and Rubina Qureshi. Each tenement has a carpet area of 180 sq ft and costs Rs 3 lakh.

The decision was taken in New Delhi. Speaking to TOI, Mumbai Congress chief Kripashankar Singh said, "I requested CM Ashok Chavan to expedite the process of allotting houses to these actors. However, Chavan wanted to know who would bear the expenditure. It was then that I offered to do so on behalf of the Mumbai Congress."

Nice that a politician has come forward to give these 2 kids homes to live in. 180 sq ft is small but an improvement over current conditions.

I only wish that some US/UK movie (pref. that wins a dozen Oscars) is made that includes a few million folks from India's slums. That might shame the Indian politicians enough to take concrete steps in improving living conditions for the economically backward classes.

2. Why not provide decent housing for millions? I realize that
living in the US that's the pot calling the kettle black, since our government pisses on the poor too. You can bet that the guys at the top of the Indian government who decide how the money is spent have other priorities.

3. the need there is so huge.
i was only there for a week and a half, so, not like i know anything really. but man. people think we have poverty here. but that place. and so much of the ecosystem there has been destroyed, and still they have nothing. the incredible amount of money that has been extracted from that continent. and still they have nothing. really nothing. not even sewers, let alone much in the way of running water. i do not know how they survive. i guess the answer is that they die every day, and no one notices.
and the government does not seem to be bothered with providing much of anything. then again, where the high tech guys are, it is a different world.
