Hialeah teacher charged with having sex with student, 15

A religious school teacher was charged over the weekend with sexual battery on a teenager -- hours after the two returned home from a trip to Disney World.
When police wanted to question a teacher accused of having an affair with an eighth-grader at a private religious school, she was out of town -- vacationing at Disney World with the student.

Upon her return Saturday, 32-year-old Maria Guzman Hernandez, a sixth-grade teacher at Hialeah's Our Lady of Charity, admitted to Hialeah police she'd had sex with the 15-year-old.

Hernandez was charged with sexual battery on a child over whom she had custodial authority, a charge similar to statutory rape.

The boy's mother, who acknowledged to both police and Department of Children & Families investigators that she approved of the relationship, is under investigation by both agencies for permitting the teen to have a months-long affair with the teacher, and for consenting to the theme park trip.

With all due respect- and understanding that I am generalizing here- the Cuban American population of Miami Florida has to have the biggest sense of entitlement and coarse bravado that I've seen anywhere I've lived in this country. They are by and large Republicans many of whom participate in a great number of repressive and violent interactions with their neighbor communities (Hatians, Nicaraguans, Hondurans, et al)...

I have experienced death threats by angry Cuban-Americans who didn't like the artistic choices of the theater for which I worked. Death threats for producing Waiting for Godot or Plays by Henrik Ibsen of all people. There have been bombings of Art Galleries in Miami that showed Art from Cubans still on the island. They spit in the face of Nelson Mandela when he visited Miami after he was set free. In the early nineties our democratic choice to unseat Ileana Ros Lehtinen, had the brass balls to suggest she would meet with Fidel to improve relations, and a mob met her at home with baseball bats they used to threaten her and destroy her car.

Granted, that democratic nominee was also a Cuban American, and Hialeah is not a homogeneous single thinking Borg, but the largely poor and right wing community represents --for the most part-- a very confused and angry subset of American culture that should in no way be excused for having a few bilingual members. I know plenty of Fascists who are bilingual. It just so happens that a lot of them are members of Alpha 66 and call Hialeah home, and yes, a lot of them don't speak English... but more importantly,and Identity politics aside most of them are Republican and/or Fascist. I don't give a $%@& what language they speak.

I've heard for many years. Really appreciate it.

Have heard many times about Cuban hate radio show hosts who regularly give out phone numbers and addresses of people they don't like poltically in order for their fellow fascists to assist in terrorizing them.

Also have heard that a past mayor of Miami actually showed up on the doorstep to talk to a woman around 9:00 at night about a letter to the editor she had written which was negative about him! Damned creepy.

Should also mention the crowds that have gathered outside musical groups from Cuba like Los Van Van, in order to hurl cans of drinks, D-cell batteries, and baggies filled with human excrement at the musicians as they attempt to enter the auditorium.

This reminds me of the hate campaign launched by the Cuban American National Foundation President, Jorge Mas Canosa, against the publisher years ago of the Miami Herald, David Lawrence, when he had published information they didn't like. They bombarded the Herald staff with death threats, and jammed Herald newspaper vending machines all over town with gum, and smeared them liberally with feces. David Lawrence and his wife both hired people to inspect their cars daily before starting them, and later he simply left. Since then the Herald has catered to the rabid fascists.

Hope as time goes by enough people from elsewhere will have diluted the concentration there to the point they no longer control Florida politics, and will lose their iron-fisted grip on South Florida and the state. Can't happen a minute too soon.

25. think about it - school year is ending AND if he just turned 15 that doesn't sound odd,

so if he goes into freshman year at 15 and a half, that'd mean he'd graduate at 18 1/2, not all that shocking. He might have been held back one year, or didn't go to kindergarten because he was too little.

As for how the teacher, as some ask, could find him attractive - #1, we don't know what he looks like, I've seen some tall & strong manly-looking 15 year olds, but intellectually they're kids, and maturity wise they're annoying! She probably got the hots and the boy convinced his mom he loves her or something which the parent should have never fell for at 15!

How can a 32 year old woman find an eighth grade boy attractive? When I was an eight grade girl I didn't find eighth grade boys attractive, all zits and skinny legs. All the Jr. High girls I knew were looking at the high school guys :9

My son has a grown man's body, he's an athlete and is extremely well built. However, he has a baby face and if you talk to him, you know he's a child!

I would beat the hell out of any woman trying to sleep with my son! We've been in malls and I've had to give women the "eye"....like what the hell are you looking at? He thinks it's funny, but it's crazy! I don't understand the attraction. We're starting to hear way too much of this.

By age 15 it was extremely common. Age 14 was not that unusual either, depending upon the cultural background.
I'm not saying that it's a good thing or that should be perceived in the same way in 21st century America. But it is always interesting to see how far societal norms have changed.

In our framework of today, a 14/15 year old is still a child. While back then they were pretty much an adult. I doubt that they were emotional adults but society told them they were grown-up because most people could not afford to be a child for that long. They were needed to work/reproduce because people got used up quicker. As a history buff, I agree that it is always interesting to see how things change.
