Gunmen in Iran Wound 3 at President's Campaign Office (Ahmadinejad)
Source: VOA

Iranian state media say gunmen have opened fire on one of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's campaign offices, wounding three people.

The IRNA news agency says the shooting took place Friday in the southeastern city of Zahedan, near the Pakistani border.

The head of the campaign office, Mohammad Zahed Sheikhi, told IRNA that three men threatened people at the site before they opened fire. He said two campaign workers and a child were injured.

He also said the three suspected gunmen were captured after being chased.

3. Yes Sir, one hardly knows what to think.
My instincts run in the direction of drama designed to boost Mahmoud's chances in the upcoming directions, but there are many other possible culprits, some of whom might even be in cahoots with one another.

4. Baluchi Seperatists would Be High On My List, Sir
But after the bombing the other day, the sort of 'alderman's trick' you suggest is certainly plausible as well.

5. That's the other one that comes immediately to mind, perhaps with "help" from somewhere.
That would seem to fit the location better. But then why a campaign office? And they only got wounded, with mere bullets, and right after the bombing yesterday, and the culprits got caught. Could be a bit of opportunistic propaganda, who is going to check the facts?

6. In Iran, Ahmadinejad campaign office attacked
Reporting from Tehran -- Preelection tensions rose Friday in Iran's religiously and ethnically mixed southeast after gunmen opened fire on the president's campaign office and a radical group claimed responsibility for the bombing of a mosque the day before that killed up to 23 people and injured scores.

Iranian authorities blamed the United States for the violence in Zahedan, on the border with Pakistan.

"The hands of America and Israel were undoubtedly involved in this incident," prayer leader Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami told supporters in Tehran, referring to Thursday's bombing of a Shiite mosque. "Although Wahhabis and the infidel and evil Salafis were an accomplice to the crime, they were being led from somewhere else."

Wahhabi and Salafi are puritanical schools of Sunni Islam rooted in Saudi Arabia. They have inspired Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda terrorist network, as well as the Taliban and other groups that denounce Shiite Islam, the majority sect in Iran.
