More Bodies Recovered Near Site of Plane Crash
Source: NYT/AP

RECIFE, Brazil (AP) -- Three more bodies were found Sunday in the ocean near the spot where an Air France jet is believed to have crashed a week ago, bringing the total number of bodies plucked from the water to five, Brazil's military said.

Authorities also said pilots searching the mid-Atlantic also spotted an undetermined number of additional bodies from the air and are sending ships to recover them, said Navy Capt. Giucemar Tabosa Cardoso.

Flight 447 disappeared in turbulent weather May 31 during a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris with 228 people aboard -- all now presumed dead. The investigation is increasingly focused on whether external instruments may have iced over, confusing speed sensors and leading computers to set the plane's speed too fast or slow -- a potentially deadly mistake.

The French agency investigating the disaster said airspeed instruments on the plane had not been replaced as the maker had recommended, but cautioned that it was too early to draw conclusions about what role that may have played in the crash.

1. Must be wrenching for the famlies as reports of bodies found
trickle in.... Think of the horror of imagining the remains of your loved one deteriorating, floating out there. Very sad... I hope they will get answers.

14. My nephew was a Navy diver for the Flight 800 tragedy
off of Long Island. He said it was just awful and afterwards was very disturbed by the memories.
They only let the guys do it for a couple days at a time because of the psychological impact.

3. I read about this on Yahoo... I want to know
where the airlines get off deciding which info should and should not be released based on how painful the info might be. Excuse me, but I want the facts on what happened!

4. I read they weren't going to release the facts on the condition of the bodies.
I don't want any coverup either. However, neither do I want the willy nilly release of unconfirmed information. I also don't care to know at this point every ghoulish jot and tittle about what is found.

I don't think they have had time to figure out facts. They just now found where the plane debris really is located.

8. I don't think we need to know the exact details of the
conditions of the bodies. My DH retired from the CG and has fished out bodies that had been in the water for days.

Let's just say they couldn't use nets for retrieval. Trust me, these are details we can all do without.

10. There's really no need to release that, we can pretty much guess at the condition
The bodies have been at sea for days in a warm climate. Presumably they're water-logged, bloated and smelly. In all probability some have been nibbled on by scavengers large and small, and likely some are gone entirely due to sharks. If any of the fuel burnt when hitting the water there might also be damage from that. After much longer they'll stop floating due the bloat gasses rupturing out and they won't be able to collect any more bodies.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out none of the funerals will be open casket.

6. How does information like
"the bodies were mangled and almost liquefied with bruising all over and limbs almost separated due to multiple fractures" help anyone except the most sadistic?

Some decency and respect for the deceased as well as sparing their families from intense torment is needed.

Air France is right about not releasing the gory details. They are really not news.

7. That detail may shed light on what happened.... I am NOT proposing
the gory details be released in that light, but a summary of conclusions from the condition of the bodies found is appropriate and can be done in a sensitive manner. It is important to know whether there was sea water in their lungs which reflects drowning after the plane hit--or whether the bodies were in such a decimated condition that it reflects a plane having broken apart in mid air. Yes, we have a right to know those conclusions based on the condition of the bodies and it can be done in a sensitive manner.

9. More than likely, if the bodies came up from ...
where the plane is, they were crushed by the pressure at depth. Internal gas from decomposition would have caused the mangled bodies to surface. Water is very deep at the location.

Old time hard hat divers working at just 300-350 feet were sometimes squeezed into their helmets if their suits lost air pressure.

15. When they find out what happened to the plane
they will let us know.

Until then, I think only family members and investigating personnel have the "right" to know.

17. Eventually the investigation will be completed.
What nobody has mentioned here is that the airline is NOT an investigating authority in this crash and has no business releasing any information to the public. The investigation is being carried out by the French government, and the investigation reports will be made public when finished. Those reports will have all the gory details that everyone wants.

"Facts" released by Air France are merely unconfirmed speculation at this point.

11. That has no value in a news story..It should be public in reports
but not in news. It is just bad taste.

12. Coming soon to a grocery checkout near you...
No doubt one of the tabloids will manage to get photos of the recovered bodies and run them. What we are all about in our society. We love the blood and guts for some reason. Perhaps our "inner predators" like it.

There is no reason for any airline to stoop to that level and while I have little good to say about Air France or any other airline at this point I do commend them for "censoring" details that serve no purpose but to add to the horror the families and friends of the victims are already going through.

Hopefully they all lost consciousness due to the decompression and didn't regain consciousness prior to whatever happened after the decompression.

18. They're getting closer...

RECIFE, Brazil – Brazilian divers found a large tail section from an Air France jet on Monday, one of the biggest pieces yet recovered from wreckage that is helping narrow the search for Flight 447's black boxes. A U.S. Navy team is bringing in high-tech underwater listening devices to detect pings from the data and voice recorders.

Two U.S. Navy devices that can detect emergency beacons to a depth of 20,000 feet (6,100 meters) are being flown to Brazil with a Navy team, according to the Pentagon. They will be delivered to ships that will then listen for transmissions from the black boxes, which are programmed to emit signals for at least 30 days.
