Spaniard gored to death at Pamplona running of the bulls; first since 1995
Source: Chicago Tribune

PAMPLONA, Spain (AP) — A charging bull gored a young Spanish man to death Friday at Pamplona's San Fermin festival, the first such fatality in nearly 15 years. Nine others were injured in a particularly dangerous and chaotic chapter of the running of the bulls.

Pamplona officials identified the man as Daniel Jimeno Romero, 27, from Alcala de Henares, outside Madrid. He was on vacation with his parents and girlfriend, who identified him.

The San Fermin festival Web site said Jimeno Romero was gored in the neck and lung during a run in which a rogue bull named Capuchino separated from the pack, which is among the worst things that can happen at Spain's most popular fiesta.

Isolated bulls are more likely to get disoriented and start charging at people.

41. The whole world suffers from testosterone poisoning. That's why we have wars.
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 07:21 AM by gauguin57
Get over it. It's true. I am convinced that, if women ran the world, we wouldn't have so many conflicts that escalate to years of violence. It's all testosterone-fueled.

It may be evil of me, but I have no sympathy for the dude that got gored. I've always thought this particular activity is ridiculous. I've nothing against tradition, but whoever thought this one up was a moron. HEY! Let's get together and stress out a bunch of animals until they freak out and toss us in the air!! Weeeee!

I feel sorry for the guy's family. But the dude got what he deserved for engaging in such a gross activitiy.

for years.

He was on vacation with his parents & girlfriend for the express purpose of participating, again.

I posted below that I felt for his family. Not so much, anymore....

12. My grandfather was "gored" by a bull on his farm
This bull didn't have horns, but my grandfather ended up hospitalized with internal injuries, broken ribs and a concussion. If my uncle hadn't been there to distract the bull and drag my grandfather into a nearby feed bunker, he would probably have died from the second charge.

My grandparents always rented their bulls from neighbors and most of the time they were ornery beasts who got a wide berth. When I learned that my father-in-law raised his own bulls and had them butchered when they started to get mean (around 3-6 years old if ever), I always wondered why my grandfather took the chances he did with renting.

22. Loose bull in New Zealand
When I was bike trekking in New Zealand, I came across a bull loose in the middle of the road. It looked at me and pawed the ground. I looked for a tree or anything. Nada. But it let me pass. That evening in the campground, there was an English bloke who was also trekking a ways behind me. After the bull let him pass, a ways down the road, a car approached from the other direction. He waved to warn them. The driver thought he was being friendly and waved back. A little while later the biker heard the screech of brakes.

30. Well, he did knowingly participate in an extremely dangerous
event. Also, an event that is connected with extremely cruel practices.

While I personally don't celebrate his death, it's hard to find a lot of sympathy for him. I feel bad for his family, unless they condoned his participation. In which case, they should have known that this was a possible outcome.

36. Hey
you run with the bulls, you die with the bulls. They're not too good with the bulls, anyhow--some of them manage to get their revenge every now and then. For the bulls, it's their last run of freedom. And even that isn't saying much. It's barbaric, cruel and I have to take the bulls' side in this.

(yeah, I know--I'm taking the side of the bulls instead of the "human" being. So what else is new? And who asked anyone to critique the worthiness of my opinion?)

"sapiens" is in the naming of the species ...
