Rafsanjani breaks silence in sermon before Friday prayers - calls for release of all prisoners

Iranian police fired tear gas and used batons to disperse supporters of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi outside Tehran University, where former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani led Friday prayers with a sermon in which called for an end to the political unrest.

"Inshallah (God willing)... I will talk about a solution for today's situation, so that a way can be found to go ahead in the future with the same greatness, unity and consensus which we had in the beginning," the former president said in a sermon that was also broadcast live on state radio.

Rafsanjani also said "large groups of Iranians" have doubts about the election results and criticized the government for the way it handled the media following the disputed election, which sparked the worst unrest in the Islamic Republic since 1979.

The former president also called for the immediate release of all those detained in the protests and stressed something must be done to remove doubts about the election results, which saw President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad defeat Mousavi by a landslide.
