Sotomayor picks up more GOP support with vote near
Source: AP

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor won more GOP support in her drive toward near-certain Senate confirmation Thursday as the first Hispanic justice, even as a growing chorus of Republicans called her unfit for the bench.

Republican Sens. Kit Bond of Missouri and Judd Gregg of New Hampshire broke with their party to announce they'd support President Barack Obama's nominee, as the Senate cleared the way for a history-making vote that will shape the court for decades to come and could carry heavy political consequences for both parties.

"There's been no significant finding against her, there's been no public uprising against her," said Bond, who is retiring. "I will support her, I'll be proud for her, the community she represents and the American dream she shows is possible."

1. I like that even a lunkhead like Kit Bond is voting for President Obama's
superb nominee, Judge Sotomayor.

She's terrific, in a word. In a more decent Senate, she'd be confirmed unanimously.

3. Yes, that is a surprise.
Partisanship or no, it wasn't surprising for the two Mainers, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, to declare their support, nor should Gregg truly be a surprise. But I would never have seen Bond coming along.

2. Nice to see some rational break in the (R) mind set.
Sotomayor is obviously qualified and will be confirmed, but it's nice to see some Republicans move aside from their lock-step party agenda and recognize her qualifications.

4. Only curmudgeons like McCain, Hutchison, and Grassley
completely ignore the Latino votes. McCain because he is finally showing his true colors, Hutchison because she has to compete with Texas governor Perry for the fundies votes for governor and Grassley because Iowa is still lily white.
