Barrett says, "I'm still standing."

WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE - A battered Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says he only did what any good citizen should do even though it led to his beating by a man after answering a grandmother's cries for help.

The 55-year-old mayor spoke Wednesday for the first time about the attack by the man as he tried to help the woman and her 1-year-old granddaughter near the Wisconsin State Fair on Saturday. The mayor suffered a shattered hand, missing teeth and gashes on his face and back of his head.

Speaking from his home where he has been recuperating since he left the hospital on Monday, Barrett said he initially thought something was wrong with the baby before quickly realizing the 20-year-old man was agitated.

Barrett said the situation got "very, very ugly, very, very quickly."

Chief Deputy District Attorney Kent Lovern expected the office to get the case Wednesday. He didn't anticipate charges before Wednesday afternoon.

3. +1
Here's hoping he runs. I would prefer him over Lawton and I think he would stand a better chance of winning against Walker or Neumann.

2. The potential for violence is always present in Milwaukee.
I wears you down.

People I have met have been gunned down. People who are my friends beaten.

Two teens were fighting in front of my house. With dozens of neighbors trying to stop it.

Gangs of children have beaten people.

There is a large hateful, violent population in Milwaukee always ready to spring.

4. As someone who lives in Milwaukee...
It seems like you are lumping a whole lot of people together with a select few.

Not cool especially since every populated area has bad apples in it.

5. Can You imagine if a good citizen had to think....
"I'd love to help but I'm unemployed and don't have any health insurace, what if I get injured?"

6. that IS fucked up
and I know folks who have had to think about that before doing something.

the republican answer is for us all to carry guns. then we can "intervene" at a distance.

7. I was unemployed and without health insurance
when I ran into oncoming traffic to stop a runaway toddler on the other side of the street from running into the street. I did hesistate until it became clear that none of the "good citizens" on the same side of the street would spare a few risk-free seconds of their time to stop the toddler.

It also was clear the driver couldn't see the little girl. The mother was too far back to catch her, and chasing her might have caused her to run faster anyway.

I was careful of the oncoming car. As soon as the toddler saw a crazy lady running at her, she stopped and backed up onto the pavement. And in my peripheral vision, I could see the driver saw me and was trying to stop in time. She couldn't, but I was able to jump sideways. Her bumper was against my shoulderbag when she stopped.

So yes, a good citizen without insurance would still do the right thing, even after other citizen's *wouldn't* take a couple risk-free seconds.
