Court Won't Hear Boy Scouts' Appeal (discriminators feel discriminated)
WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court refused Monday to hear an appeal from the Boy Scouts over what the organization claims is discrimination because of its policy against hiring gays.

The case revisited the gay rights fight surrounding the high court's ruling four years ago that the Boy Scouts have the right to ban openly homosexual scout leaders. This time, the question was whether states may treat the Scouts differently than other organizations because of that policy.

The Scouts asked the justices to hear a case from Connecticut, where officials dropped the group from a list of charities that receive donations through a state employee payroll deduction plan.

That's unconstitutional discrimination, the Boy Scouts argued.

1. Aren't they trying to argue
on the same grounds that gay people argued against them four years ago?

Did I really read this correctly?

Wow. Conservatives really are eminently predictable when it comes to expressions of blatant hypocrisy. I thought that was just an urban legend or something....

3. Do they want cheese with their whine?
They can't have it both ways. If they are private and cannot meet requirements to be listed in a government employees list of payroll deduction charities, tough shit.

They wanted this. Next step, ban them from public school recruitment.

4. I find it bizzarre
That even with such a conservative SCOTUS that we have, that gay rights are repeatedly upheld. This indicates to me that even the most conservative reading of that document indicates that equal protection under the law means equal protection under the law.

What part of "equal" don't they understand?

5. I don't think it's "equal" they have a problem with.
I think they don't understand "people" or "citizens". They think only wealthy white male heterosexual Republicans qualify for equal protection.

6. Classic definition of chutzpah....
Kid kills his parents, then throws himself on the mercy of the court because he's an orphan.

Right wing weasels make my head hurt (apologies to actual weasels).

7. They were used to special treatment for a century
In our county, for instance, Boy Scouts didn't have to pay for the use of meeting rooms that other groups had to pay for, and the Scouts could reserve the same facility practically in perpetuity--essentially always at the front of the line.

It was a shock to them when the school district and the parks department told them they would now be treated like everyone else: pay for use of facilities on the same basis as others, and get in line for reservations.

Tough. :nopity: :nopity: :nopity:
