Kansas bigotry falls flat at Brooklyn synagogues

A handful of hateful Midwesterner’s brought their anti-Semitic and anti-gay message to two Brownstone Brooklyn synagogues on Saturday — where they were met with anger, condemnation, and some old-fashioned chutzpah.

Though the events remained peaceful, members of the Westboro Baptist Church — a Kansas-based religious sect that regularly protests against Jews, gays, President Obama, fallen soldiers and just about everything else that Brooklynites know and love — tried as hard as they could to provoke passersby when they gathered in front Congregation Beth Elohim on Eighth Avenue in Park Slope and the Kane Street Synagogue in Cobble Hill in the midst of the Jewish high holy days.

4. A good friend of ours is a member of the Kane Street Synagogue

It is a lovely old building with an educated progressive congregation. The Westboro freaks also turned up on Long Island. You really have to wonder about how people end up so twisted and hateful that they make this type of activity the focal point of their lives.

be all over the place w/ no visible means of support. I attended a rally, here in SoCal, when the opinion was published on Prop H8. There were some opposition demonstrators there w/ unrelated but incredibly hateful posters and huge signs. I wondered then if they were phelps disciples.

Phelps serves the same function for the rest of the GOP (yes, I know he claims to be a Democrat but like the crazy uncle in the basement do YOU claim Fred Phelps?) as, say, Operation Rescue does for the not-so-rabid anti-abortion groups: he's so batshit crazy he makes the rest of them look rational. To keep Phelps going requires lots of liquid capital, which Richard Mellon Scaife has in abundance.

We were protesting their hate spews about gays. Phelps' group was protesting them for not being bigoted enough against gays. :crazy:
